Ok, so I only had 2 strobes available and no white seamless available, nor a white wall to use and I really wanted to take a couple of pics with blown white background behind the model. In normal scenario I would use white seamless and light it with 2 strobes (one on each side and use some barn doors to block the light from hitting the model too much from the sides).

What I end up doing is using a 53" Elinchrom Octa Softbox behind the model and used an Elinchrom Deep Octa right of the model as main light. The 53" Octa provided perfect white back with a very subtle rim effect.
EDIT: I meant 69" Octa.. LOL...

My light meter died on me so it was a bit tricky getting the proper ratio between the two lights, and involved a monkey approach to get the effect I wanted. Lesson learned and I will always carry replacement batteries for my lightmeter from now on, on my camera bag :)

Here are 2 pics:

I know this has been done before by many using the Octabank but I could not find a thread using a normal large Octa so I thought I would share...

Cheers

Awesome! Shows you know what you're doing as well as the ability to think on your feet.
This is the reason I really want at least a softbox. A very portable and simple way to get a high key look going on.

Oh I've even done that with product and tabletop stuff using a beauty dish for the white background, go for it/

Yup Yup, the 69" Octa is great for that but my new favorite is the Chimera 54" x 72" softbox. Makes a great background.

I've done this with kids before (with the 53). I was wondering how small your model was! :-)

it works great and is a nice modifier, makes it kinda like cheating though, hard to make a bad image

I love the fact that for full body shots no need to feather the light or be worried about moving it when the model lays low... Just set it up and as long as model remains at same distance, you just keep shooting..LOL.. yes it does feel like cheating..

I think you really start to appreciate large modifiers once you actually have large modifiers. Until I got the 69" octa I really didn't know what even coverage with gradual falloff was and then it was painfully obvious. ;)

I have two PCB 30 x 60 lagre foldable softboxes. I wonder if I could set them up right next to each other and get a 60 x 60 square? Might have to clone out a line in the middle but I bet it would not show!! Anybody tried this?

Oh it definitely works.

I've done test shots that aren't worth posting but I will be shooting with that rig over the Summer and at some point I'll have real world samples. The tests I've done and the catch light closeups show me that if you want it to look like one light source the modifiers just have to be edge to edge. If you're not using a grid and you were pixel peeping then you'd probably see the 'seam' but with grids in place it's a seamless transition.
