Rob, not 100 percent sure we are talking about the same thing here. I was wondering about using the 2 softboxes together behind the model aimed at the camera. Is that what you are talking about? Almost seems like you are talking about lighting the subject not providing a pure white back ground?

Nowadays I shoot Nikon, but deep inside I am still a Canon lover... plus Nikonians don't have a cool place to hang like POTN :)

Oops. Sorry, I went off on a tangent. Forget the part about the grids.

If you put 2 softboxes side by side and you're going to use them for a pure white background it will definitely work and you won't even see where they meet.
