How much $ have you spend on your camera, lens, gears, accessories, etc...

I wish that we had the kind of income where I could call photography my "cheapest hobby" - as it is, to get this kind of money invested in upgrading, I had to tell hubby (and this is an honest intention on my part) that I want to earn money with this going forward. This is at this point a business investment, though the sole purpose of the business end is to invest more money in my kit until I have every lens and body I want.

As a "hobby" photography and music are probably neck-in-neck. I own a spinet piano, a higher end Yahama Clavinova, a $1000 Yamaha portable full-size keyboard, and an Alvarez guitar... (oh, and a classic wooden clarinet from the 1950s and a 1920s vintage silver tenor saxophone). Writing as a hobby is only at about $700, so definitely a far, far third. Now, if you count my chicken raising a hobby it costs me about $90/month, cost me $800 for building stuff, and about $80/year in new stock. I've been at it for just over two years now... so I guess it would be between writing and music.... ?

I really need better hobbies... crocheting - pfeh - it has cost me less than $300 total including all the stuff I've crocheted and given as gifts! ROFL

that's awesome. my fiance chops off feet for a living. I'm in the car business. so now I can afford to get good deals on exotics. lol! actually, I don't think I would buy an exotic. I would rather build a tube framed classic for the street. just way overkill.

Every night I wonder whether I'll end up there one day.
Well I don't see myself needing 4 cars, Ide be happy with just one along with the pile of nice primes.

I knew I should have finished college...

Wow... I guess I should be happy having spent so much of life poor... I can't figure out what I would do with cars that had no real purpose except to look pretty and make people's heads turn the rare times I drove them... unless your $500K in cars are collectible and likely to retain and grow in value, then they're investments, not hobbies...

If I could afford to just have my kit completed I'd be a happy woman... I've always been someone who was drawn to the arts, and love photography, music and painting. I don't want much beyond that. Having my poor used 2003 Explorer functioning again for four grand is enough (I've already told hubby we're replacing the transmission when it dies, too. It is the only vehicle I've ridden in since getting sick that doesn't make me throw up because of how bad the vibration is). I care anymore about driving something impressive... now if we could find me a good, healthy enough used muscle car from the 60s, since I can do a lot of the work on those myself, thatis a vehicle I would be willing to purchase...

It is likely that in the end my photography equipment will always be worth more than the car I'm driving...

In 2004 when I bought my 10D and 17-40L I spent about $2450.

Since 2009 (when I began switching my video production business over to DSLR) I've spent about $9000. (All tax deductible )

So I guess my total is in the neighborhood of $11,500. (Bags, memory cards, accessories etc may total up to more than I think so give or take a few hundred either way....)

I lost count, around $5,000 and counting. OH BOY! Good thing I'm not married.

Yikes, don't tell me girlfriend. Maybe about $20,000 or so. Haven't made much money off of photography, but i love getting outside and enjoying the surroundings. Met some amazing people through photography, and been to some places i wouldn't have thought going to either, so it all pays itself off.

£3k in 2 weeks, only just counted it all up now really.
Ill be poor for a while now....

I think I am at around $7000. There has been a lot of little stuff like lighting modifiers and stands that get to be a pain to add up. If I add the items on my short "wish" list, it will put me around $10K

Just have to add to this.

The older one gets the more disposable income one has. When the mortgage(s) have been paid off and the kids have moved out and have their own well paying professions the easier it is to be able to spend so much on a "hobby" (the thought of making 1c from photography holds no interest whatsoever for me).
Twenty years ago, theres no way I could have had such an arsenal of L lenses or other top notch gear.

I second that. That's the situation I am in. Now I can afford doing photography as a hobby, but I spend way more on my main interest - travel. Fortunately, both go hand in hand.

I own about $5k worth of equipment. I have no idea how much I have spent over almost 50 years that photography has been my hobby.
