The older one gets the more disposable income one has. When the mortgage(s) have been paid off and the kids have moved out and have their own well paying professions the easier it is to be able to spend so much on a "hobby" (the thought of making 1c from photography holds no interest whatsoever for me). Twenty years ago, theres no way I could have had such an arsenal of L lenses or other top notch gear. I agree. I started in 1981 when my uncle bought me a Canon AE-1 Program for my Bar Mitzvah. As I have "matured" (in years, not in mentality), I been very fortunate to be able to continually upgrade my equipment (selling my "used" equipment to friends to get them into the hobby as well). A hobbyist looks at the expenditures differently than a professional. As for cost, photography is far less expensive than many and readily obtainable available for many regardless of their budget. Recently, I heard a professional baseball player relate why so many people look up to professional sports players. Everyone has picked up a baseball, football or soccer ball and imagined themselves playing in the big leagues. Those professionals sports players are living the dreams of so many kids. The same is true for photography. We all look at the professionals and admire their work. Yet, unlike professional sports, every hobbyist of many walks of life can pick up a camera and actually take professional looking photographs. We can learn from professionals and other hobbyist and improve our "craft." While I may not be a professional photographer who gets to photograph models, landscapes or products for a living, I can take the "lessons" learned here and elsewhere and still produce some amazing photos of family and friends. I may never play professional sports - may not have the physical talent or capabilities. Yet, with photography, there is such a variety and such a wealth of opportunities to develop one's own view that the costs of the equipment is miniscule compared to the amount of enjoyment I receive from the pictures I am able to take and share.
