A friend of mine is comeing over from Nikon, he has a d3 and 500f4 vr .

He wants the 500f4 isL, a lens i use with my 7d .

Now im very happy with the 7d and see no reason to go to a mk4 .

So the question is this IS the mk4 any better than the 7d for wild life .
Thanks
Rob.

My own 2 cents: only if someone else is willing to carry it.

@GyRob

I had 7D, now I have 1dmk4 and I can tell you, 1Dmk4 is in totally different league.
Not only in ISO noise, but also in IQ...
But there is also a lot of price difference between them, so your friend has to decide for himself.

I've shot w/ both and for IQ the 1D4 wins, low light and fast shooting hands down. But at over 2x the price, the 7D will allow for great glass if not already part of the arsenal. I will say this, the 1d4 is my end all goal for cameras as of now :p. The 7D is great, and if I find a great deal I would get it quick

The 7D is stellar for wildlife. Sure the ISO handling on the 1D4 is better, but given the added crop factor, great AF, and better metering on the 7D, not to mention less bulk, I would rather take it and a good lightweight long lens than a longer lens and the 1D4 to lug around for wildlife shots.

Here are a few shots with the 7D at our local "safari".

Last year on safari the leader had a 1DIV. We had just gotten our 7Ds. He was very impressed at how close a 7D can come to 1DIV capabilities. But, it there is a budget for it, and you want to shoot wildlife or sports...go 1DIV with some serious glass.

Can't go wrong with either....depends on the size of his pocket. A lot depends on other uses...Questions that say "which camera better to take a picture of a lamp?" are tough....I assume the camera may be used for other things as well. If tracking is needed, or ISO coverage, or durability/build, or FPS, weather sealing, then the Mark 4 is answer. A general all around camera and you don't want to spend a lot...the 7D is awesome! (plus you get some reach from crop factor!)

Wildlife as in walking through the zoo, or wildlife as hiking up and down various terrain all day long?

Walking through the woods, up and down hills all day would lean me towards the lighter weight package.

In a Zoo, well then the heavier package should be OK.

ZOO -- 1D Mk4 + 500mm
WOODS -- 7D + 400mm

I'm looking to get a 600mm lens, and it will be in front of a 7D.

This past winter I have seen enough setup variations to see what seems to work best " in the field ".

They're both great cameras and up to the task. There are very good reasons for the price point of the 1DIV, or I suspect Canon wouldn't sell very many.

Very much depends on the depth of the pockets.

nice shoots. I would go with a 7D. I just came back from the DC zoo and saw hand full of people using 1d's or Nikon 3d. Most of the people were using rebel series or nikon 3000's.

After a slow day reading all different threads here today bashing the 5D and or Mk4. I'm amazed anyone would choose it at all yet alone switch from a nikon.:D:lol:

Is there a sarcasim/joking font?

If it's for birds, then I think you would really appreciate the difference between the 7D and the MKIV

Yes, I am not sure my 1D4 will track a dragonfly in flight... :)

(just kidding, I know it will, but the 7D did as well, and a DIF is much more difficult to track than most BIF)

I would take the 1D4 over the 7D only if you need weather sealing. The crop factor and increased resolution on the 7D will help you assuming you have good glass in front of it.
