canon suggested the 50 1.2L for photographing my artwork, f8 thru f16 is the range i need and if the 50 1.4 is as good in that range then why not use that lens instead?

there's no point in selling your 24-70 for the 50L if your going to be shooting at F8 and above.

that is true,

the 50 1.2 L would be for 1.2 to 2.0 "where it shines"

the 50 1.4 would be for a basic fast all around lens which could also be used for the purpose i mentioned, but as pointed out, the 24-70 2.8 L can do this also and i already own it,

i now have my answer, i will keep the 24-70 2.8 L and possibly save up for a 50 1.2 L to be used for the creative "1.2 to 2.0" range. this should cover all of my 50mm needs,

If you are reproducing art, there aren't many other options for the EF mount than the Zeiss Makro Planar 50/2. It's better than both lenses, by a lot.

The lens produces a perfectly flat field...

I don't know if it has to be the Zeiss, but I agree a ~50mm macro would be ideal.

I can't help you with the 50L, but I can recommend against the 50/1.4. I did a series of lens tests a while ago that included a closeup shot of an oil painting.

Open the images in separate tabs in your browser and flip between them:

--Canon EF 50/1.4 @ f/5.6 (external link)

--Zeiss 50/2 Makro Planar ZE @ f/5.6 (external link)

--Leica Summilux-M 50/1.4 ASPH @ f/5.6 (external link)

The Leica is of course for a different camera system so it's not applicable in your case, but I thought it might be interesting to include it as it's really the best 50mm prime ever made.

Don't know if the work distance would be a limit, but I'd go for 100L. At 2.8 with IS what it does is incredible (of course a flat subject).

I've used Canons 50 f/2.5 CM with good success. It requires shorter distance but lacks IS.

I have and love my 50L, but using it at f/1.2-2.0 would not be my choice for this sort of application. I'd go for maximum sharpness and focus accuracy here.

I would hope you would be using a tripod or copy stand for shooting artwork. IS probably not important for that. The 100L is a great lens, though.
