I have a 40D and I need a battery. I don't want to pay extra because of a little "Canon" name printed on it though. Anyone have any brand suggestions of good solid third party batteries?

I've not had any problems with "off-brand" batteries. The one I got from Canon is 1390 mAh. One Sterlingtek one I bought is 1800 mAh & I've seen even higher rated ones.

Many thanks! Do those charge in the standard charger?

I had a couple of Sterlingtek batteries that I used with my 40D and they worked great. They charged in the standard Canon charger just fine. I also had a battery from Best Buy that worked just fine but I don't remember the brand. It was cheaper than Canon but much higher than Sterlingtek.

I now have a Sterlingtek battery for my 7D and it charges just fine in the Canon charger.

Awesome. I just ordered a couple. $30 for two including shipping is a LOT better than Canons price! Thanks for the advice!

Ones from Best Buy are probably Digi-power. I have a couple from Promaster for my D300 and D70 and they work fine. I wouldnt be surprised if the company that makes batteries for Canon (or Nikon) also makes a number of the 3rd party brands also.

Nikon D300
Canon AE-1P (it becomes digital when pics are scanned in with a scanner:lol:)
