If it is a remote trigger then my guess is the last shot is a one light setup using the bad trigger.

That the two problems look so different, (a shadow vs. total blackness) AND it wasn't your sync speed because you double checked...maybe the shutter is shot.

He said he can not reproduce it any other time though. So it appears to be a flash/synch issue.

missed that part. well I got nuthin'. Don't you just hate INTERMITTENT problems with anything, camera, car etc. If it always screwed up, you say "must get it fixed", but this intermittent stuff. You are always left wondering when it will strike again. that bites.

I'd put the flash on camera and start testing. Remote triggers just adds a factor that I'd try to eliminate before blaming it on the camera.

Trigger a shot at 1/320 and 1/400 with the same setup and see if it looks similar. Or try another trigger. Do you turn the camera clockwise for portrait mode? Are you lefty?

i will do some more tests. i do portrait mode most of the time but sometimes ill catch myself turning it the otherway.

I see others complain about this problem when trying to synch at higher shutter speeds. Looks like it's probably a safe bet that the trigger is causing it. The following example is from POTN but do a google search and others also show this problem.

Toly, when you shoot in portrait orientation, do you turn your camera clockwise, or counterclockwise?

Sometimes with these RF-602's, when the batteries get weaker, you can see this happen even at shutter speeds that normally sync properly (1/160).

Per Kel's comment, do you have the CF function set for 2nd curtain on your camera, or on your 580's?

My money is on delayed strobe firing, and the solution being to reduce ambient light and use a slower shutter speed (or use wired strobes).

it was a very simple problem and maybe even embarrassing as well lol. one of the speedlites (580ex) when triggered wirelessly had masters ON and i didn't double check the settings. somehow it got changed and this sloppiness created this problem :)

I know Dave that was the first thing i did, changed the batteries. this is a huge relief for me:cool:
