Only way hot shoe flash will fill nicely the bigger modifiers is if it in bounced position (like umbrella, softliter etc) but then you waste power. PLM is the only one which ddoesn't waste power (based on AB and Rob G's web site) but not nice soft light unless you use front diffuser but then you loose power also.

I would still pick Ab800 or even AB400 with VML over hot shoe flash options. When using softliter I prefer to use two flashes ganged up mainly for recycle purposes. I don't want them clicking at full powers.

They are all over fleebay from about 33" to 60 inches. I use the 43"ers and love them. If you stick some pieces of velcro on them you can easily flag for light spill. Easy breakdown and work great with speed lights. I'm sure ther aren't exactly what your refering to, but.....they do cast a lot of light, easily lighting one model.
