Could some of you post examples of photos posted with a ring flash? I have the opportunity to buy one at a good price, and would just like to see various examples so I know what I might expect.

Thanks!

Gotta ask folks to post the outer diameters of these ring flashes in use in these examples (and/or post the brand and model of ring flash)...the ring flashes which are used professionally might be 20" in diameter, for example. Many of the examples are not exhibiting the characteristic 'shadow all around' the subject which is often quite distinctive of ring light shots, or the catchlights in the eyes are quite small (with no 'donut' of no-light in the center), so I wonder about the sizes of the ring lights (some really are not much larger than macro ring lights, which are a different beast than the larger diameter ring lights)

OK. Consider the lowly Bundt pan... which I did, and made a ring flash out of it with some aluminum flat bar, screws, white and black paint, and a Dremel.
I don't know the outer diameter of a Bundt pan, but next time you're at the grocery store, check it.
I'm pretty sure I posted a few pics in one of the DIY threads.

Nice work in the DIY ring flash, Dave. I found your prior posting on this. Unfortunately there is not a single Bundt pan size, so we still have to guess about size, but the photo in https://photography-on-the.net …hp?p=11453988&postcount=8 seems to show outer diameter is only a few inches larger than the camera body, so still a fairly small source. What was the actual light source used with the Bundt pan reflector?

Just measured it. Outside diameter is 8.5 inches, inside opening is 3.5.
Light source was a 420ex.

Thanks, Dave.

The ring flash (version used for fashion or magazine avant garde shots, not the version used for macro illumination) is characterized as having the shadow edge transition somewhat in between a conventional small reflector and a softbox.
Size is the reason for that, as the size of the apparent light source typically is in between a 7" reflector and a 36" softbox.
The hole in the center allows the lens position to be 'within' the circle of light, rather than outside the circle of light created by a similar size beauty dish, providing source position capabilities not possible with beauty dish or conventional reflector usage. and this large donut of light creates the shadow around the periphery of the subject when the diameter of the ring flash is relatively large (>20"), and also creates the very distintive catchlights in the eyes.
