I personally do not use 'protection' filters unless I am in a sandy/salt-air/dusty/wet environment (On or close to the beach for example). I do have a good quality UV for these instances. Luckily most of my high-usage lenses are 77mm so I only need one filter.
I do (nearly) always use the hood though, not only for blocking out stray light but also to help shield the end of the lens from any damage.
This is all very much a personal thing and some people will have UV filters on all their lenses and use a hood also.
Filters can cause strange 'flare' type effects (double reflections etc.) if they catch the sun wrong.
There is no right or wrong in this matter and it is down to personal preference. If you feel happier using a filter for protection of the front element, use one.
I fear this thread will turn into a hood vs filter debate now though...
