QUOTED IMAGE

Talking about poor umbrella brackets, after DYI'ing myself two 8mm umbrellas into 7mm ones via cutting and inserting steel rod, i recently found out the 7mm no longer connect in my umbrella brackets, i need to source a longer screw to actually secure them now.

What a pain umbrellas are turning out to be in the long run.

(These are the kinds i currently have : http://www.bhphotovideo.com …117_Umbrella_Bracket.html (external link) ) or well something similar but sourced locally.

To answer the OP :

using the above mentioned umbrella bracket (or something similar)

with dave's

suggested bracket, would allow you to mount the hotshoe horizontally for the umbrella. Since the umbrella goes through the middle hole in the swivel, and the bracket goes ontop with the flash.

I hope this helps.

i'm finding it crazy that there's no speedlight umbrella brackets that allow for the speedlight to be mounted horizontally! really?

i just went through like all of the ones at B&H...

dmward offered a very good solution: the PocketWizard AC7 RF shield. It works perfectly with the Photek Softlighter.

I picked up a plastic bracket on ebay similar to the cheetah wing bracket. Back then I think I paid like 4 bucks. Using that with an L bracket the inexpensive diy is very rigid.

I use this with my softliter and Westcott apollo. The ac7 shield sounds like a plan now too.
