Hey guys, I am currently looking for a new primary zoom/ walk around lens. Also, I am getting ready for a trip to Hearst Castle which I understand does not allow Flashes to be used. So since I am already looking for a new lens I figured I would ask for recommendations.

Right now I am considering the Canon 15-85mm and the 24-105 L. Neither of these is particularly fast but I like the focal length for use as a general walk around lens. So should I go with these and try to pick a fast prime for inside shots at the castle? Something like a Sigma 30 1.4 or a Canon equivalent. Or is there sufficient light to use one of the above two lenses and bump up the ISO? I will be using my new 60D as the body for the trip.

As always thank you for any and all help.

Juan

It was 4 years ago when we went to Hearst Castle last. Since we had been on a prior tour of interior rooms, we opted for a tour of some of the outside locations and inner areas not in the other tour we had been on during a prior trip. The slower interior shots which I took were at ISO 1600, at 1/25 or 1/10 shutter speed and f/4, ambient light only.

I heartily suggest something at least 17mm wide, if not wider, for use on APS-C

Ditto. Wide best, you want to capture the rooms as you walk in. I went when I still had a point and shoot and I keep going to the doorway to try to 'get everything in'. Same for outdoor shots, the views of both the buildings and it's surroundings are awesome. Make sure to take a picture of the pool from the stairs directly in front of it.

Hearst Castle is really cool. For the reasons Wilt stated.
No doubt on a crop I would take a 16-35 F2.8 and 24L, rent one otherwise.
Full frame I would take 24L and 35L.

Go ahead, spin the wheel.

Bring that Sigma WA you have for sale. A good walk around lens for your 60d is the 15-85mm.

Two years ago, in California for the first time, we didn't have time to take in the Castle, though it was, and remains, on my bucket list.
