I've looked at the charts and read the articles, but I still don't have a clear answer!

Bokeh, focus, and build quality aside, what is the absolute sharpest lens/aperture combo on a crop body Canon camera?

Is it 50mm 1.8 II at 4.5?

Please help! Thanks for your time! ^^

I somewhat doubt that a 50 at 4.5 is the sharpest possible. But honestly when you stop any lens down to f/9 it's going to be razor sharp.

EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM @ f/4. Absolute RAZOR... sharpest Zoom I've ever used... let alone owned.
EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM @ f/2.8 Pretty damn amazing too.
EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM @ f/2.8 Pretty damn amazing too... not as much as the f/4L @ f/4 but crackin.

EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM @ f/2.8 spot on sharp.

But in the right hands with the right skill and patience... the Minolta Rokkor-PG 58mm f/1.2 @ f/1.2 beats em all. That lens just amazes the **** out of me.

I'm wondering about your question.. Are you thinking of buying any lens on sharpness only without considering other attributes also??

if absolute total sharpness is your only criteria then look at the macro prime lens - Tamron 90mm, Canon 100mm, 60mm, etc.

I feel my 100mm L Macro is sharper and lesser distortion than 135L on my 400D/XTi.

Canon 5D3 + Zoom (EF 17-40L, 24-105L & 28-300L, 100-400L II) & Prime (24L II, 85L II, 100L, 135L & 200 f/2.8L II; Zeiss 1,4/35)
Sony α7r + Zeiss 1,8/55 FE
Nikon Coolpix A; Nikon F3 & F100 + Zeiss 1,4/50

Um, what's the point of this question.....?

I'll entertain even though I feel that your question (sharpness @ just a specific aperture) should have no weight in your decision making.

17-55mm @ f/4
70-200mm f/4 IS @ f/5.6
70-200mm f/2.8 II @ f/4
100mm Macro @ f/4
60mm Macro @ f/4-f/5.6

See the trend?

According to just about any lens tests, the sharpest Canon brand lenses are any of their supertelephoto primes. So pick from:

EF 200/2L IS USM
EF 300/2.8L II IS USM
EF 400/2.8L II IS USM
EF 500/4L II IS USM
EF 600/4L II IS USM
EF 800/5.6 IS USM

and shoot them at f/5.6. That will be as sharp as you can get.

I'm not sure what the purpose of this exercise is, but there is the answer.

actually, that is not the answer!

The OP has a 1.6 crop body so the sharpest lens for his camera is _____________

Photozone has never tested a single one of the lenses in my list so I have absolutely no idea why you linked them as a rebuttal to what I said.

So, which Canon lenses do you think are sharper than the supertelephoto primes?

I would generalize and say because I don't own any, but a prime macro lens stopped down to 5.6 by nature has to be extremely sharp.

Sony A7 MKII, Sony A&& MKII, Sony A6000, Sony Zeiss 55mm F1.8, Sony Zeiss 16-35mm F4, Sony Zeiss 24-70mm F4, Sony 70-200mm G F4, Tamron 70-300mm A mount, Canon 7DMKII, Canon 100-400mm L IS
