In terms of absolute sharpness, there are several international astronomical surveys running which use arrays of the 200/1.8L lenses coupled to cooled CCD cameras. These lenses were selected both for speed and for image quality. Here's a link... (external link) to the SuperWASP.

8 200/1.8 L form one single system ?
No wonder I can't find this lens...

All of my lenses are amazingly sharp wide open, and only get better F5.6 or F8.

Sharpest lens ever? The 75-300 Mk1

Well, ask a silly question......

I've looked at the charts and read the articles, but I still don't have a clear answer!

Bokeh, focus, and build quality aside, what is the absolute sharpest lens/aperture combo on a crop body Canon camera?

I, along with others above, am still wondering what the point of the question is.

+1

Why?

A better question is "I like to photograph _______, what would be the best lens to accomplish this?".

What if I told you the sharpest lens out there is the 500mm f4L (just an example, not saying it is the sharpest), but you like to take landscape pictures. All the sharpness in that lens isnt going to help you much if it sits in the bag constantly because you cant find opportunities to use it.

Much more to a lens than sharpness and at a certain point, it will either out-resolve you camera sensor or the differences between lenses will be insignificant anyway.
