Hey...just have a question about focus issues with my 60D.

I caught a spider which was about oh, 1cmx1cm. Not many spiders in Hong Kong...so it was a bit of a score. I let him go at the end...but for a few test shots I put him in a container...a little black, brown and white jumping spider he was.

Anyway...I wanna show one shot...the full view and a crop of that shot that is almost 1:1.

The problem is focus. Sorry...I don't know exactly the metering mode I was in...but I had a focus point right on this spider...right on his head...heard the focus lock...but the resultant shot is not focused well at all. I was using a tripod and remote hand-held timer to get the shot. The spider didn't move.

I guess I was at about the minimum focal distance....30cm...I may have even been a bit closer from memory.

Shot details:
f4.5, 1/125, 1600iso, 100mm

Here's the wide:

And here's the (almost) 1:1 crop of the same shot:

The crop shows that focus is poor.

I'm wondering why that is.

Was the aperture too wide?

Could my lens need calibration? I dunno...any tips?

thanks

It's not focus, it's lack of depth of field. For macro, f/4.5 is very wide. Try f/11 for best results on a 60D. At f/16 diffraction blur is noticeable and by f/32 it is horrendous (even on a full-frame camera).

There are hairs on the middle of the legs that are in focus, but the tips of the legs are not and neither is the top of the body. Ergo, it is depth of field.

Ok...that's what I thought a little bit too...4.5 is very shallow right for depth of field?

thanks

More DOF will definitely help. Even with larger apertures at close distances you will still have limited DOF. You should give manual focus a try so you get the part of the frame you most want to feature in focus, especially for what appears to be a relatively static subject like this.
