Hello all,

Quick question...I tried searching for the problem before because I remember reading about it awhile ago, but couldn't find it. Is there a compatibility problem between the 40D and Tamron 17-50? I'm pretty sure I read some official release by Tamron saying that there is a problem.

I am wondering because my gf wants to get into photography and will be using my old 40D and I would like to find a good lens for her (without going for the Canon 17-55)

Thanks a lot

Case closed! Sorry for the scare

Thanks for the reply Gregory...

I digged a bit deeper into the archives of the site I thought I saw it on and found it:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com …h-Certain-EF-lenses-Issue (external link)

The article says that the "Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC Lens" will have the issue too

I'm assuming the 17-50 II non-VC and the 17-50 II VC will NOT have these problems? It looks like they are talking about the mark I VC.

What a relief! Can you quickly check the peripheral AF points to confirm?

Looks like the mk II non-VC was released in May 2006, which is far from the year 1990-1995 range the article talks about. Also the lens is f/2.8, so I can't imagine any problems. I wonder why the mk I was even listed, as the problem seems to have to do with lenses that include f/5.6 as the max aperture somewhere in the range.

Phew

I haven't used my Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 on a 40D but use it often with great results on my 20D and 50D..

I doubt there are any compatibilty problems with the 40D.

When I had the 17-50 it worked perfectly on my 40D. No issues at all and it gave me many great images.

I had that exact combo a few years back. Mine was great until I put a flash on then it would miss focus the majority of the time. My problem may have been isolated to my equipment, however it was an issue for me.
