A recent dramatic price DECREASE on certain Elinchrom reflectors induced me to purchase a Maxilite a few weeks ago from Amazon. There are several enthusiastic Maxilite owner/users on the forum so I thought I'd give this big reflector a try. Now, since I own both Elinchrom 600RXes and PCB Einsteins, whenever possible, I try to adapt the unique Elinchrom light modifiers for use on the Einsteins. I've already adapted my 17" square. The Maxilite would be next.

Some Elinchrom reflectors are particularly good candidates for hybridization as their original mounts are separate pieces riveted to the body of the reflector. The 17" square is one such reflector; the Maxilite is another.

Of course, drilling out the rivets and removing the original elinchrom mount is only half the battle. You still need to find a suitable AB mount. Jerry Kacey to the rescue! His AB/White Lightning adapter is ideal for this operation. At least it would be if it were 5-1/2" in diameter instead of a bit over 6". The Kacey adapter is made of steel, not aluminum, and is VERY difficult to work with. I'm certainly not equipped to cut this ring down to the required size. Fortunately, I was able to locate a local engine rebuilding shop that was willing to perform the surgery for me. Even then, it took them three tries to cut the ring. Eventually, they were able to cut it properly on a lathe.

With that out of the way, the rest of the mod is easy. The finished product:

IMAGE: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5304/5648147066_6c656bb7f5_o.jpg

The Kacey adapter must be cut down to 5-1/2" in diameter so that it will fit in the "well" where the original Elinchrom mount was seated:

IMAGE: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5185/5647583511_81c5cd0683_o.jpg

The cut down AB ring is held in place with three 6-32 machine screws and wing nuts. The AB and original Elinchrom mounts are quickly interchangeable:

The 3/8" hole in the AB ring seen at the 12 o'clock position in the prior photo was added to permit use of a deflector:

IMAGE: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5262/5647583673_1c0bc58aae_o.jpg

If you're motivated to try something like this, it's easy to do IF you're able to get the tough-as-nails Kacey AB adapter trimmed down to the required size (actually, the full-sized Kacey adapter can be used as is but it has to be screwed to the outside of the reflector). Other than that, all that's involved is drilling out the three rivets holding the original Elinchrom mount to the reflector and drilling three appropriately placed holes in the cut down AB ring. One additional 3/8" hole will make the mount AB deflector friendly.

Thanks for making this possible, Jerry.

Dave,
After modifying the Kacey AB adapter plate, it looks like the mounting holes for the Eli adapter remain intact. ... So I presume you can still simply mount the Kacey Eli mount and you're good-to-go for standard Rotalux modifiers? If so, the reduction down to 5 1/2 " is a very nice mod. ... Well done.

That's correct. I specifically instructed the machine shop to avoid cutting into the four existing holes in the AB/White Lightning adapter. As it turns out, I could have specified a slightly larger (than 5-1/2") diameter. However, even as it is, I think there's enough material left around the holes that I will still be able to use it with Jerry's Elinchrom adapter. I was too tired to try it this evening. If the Easter bunny gives me some time to myself tomorrow, I'll give it a try and report back.

I love your DIY projects Dave, your talent is far beyond mine in this area. I'm also a little curious to what you think of the Maxilite? I think it's brilliant and a must have for Quadra users in particular.

Thank you for the kind words, Luke. I'm afraid I don't yet have an opinion of the Maxilite to offer. It was only delivered to me a few days ago and I haven't had a chance to shoot with it. I certainly like the sample images posted by Simon and Jeff. I take it you're quite fond of your Maxilite. Do you shoot yours nude or with a grid and/or deflector?

Most of the time with the Silver Deflector, extremely specular direct light. I've even used it with the white deflecotr and gaffered my Deep Octa frontal diffuser over it for a mini contrasty beauty dish of sorts. I've been meaning to order a grid for a while now just haven't got around to it, I think it'll be even more versatile with a grid.

Nice job Dave!
I've heard a lot about third party inserts falling off the Einstein.
Is my insert holding strong?

Real great mod.

What material are you using for the reflector?
Does the one bolt hold the reflector on the correct plane?

Can't wait to see some sample photo.

Absolutely, Jerry (knock wood). Your insert seems to lock into place solidly with no play. Using the AB adapter together with your Elinchrom adapter, I've mounted both the 39" deep octa and 69" octa on my Einsteins and neither has fallen off or given any inkling that it might fall off. The only small caveat is that I haven't used either of those Rotalux modifiers on the latest v2.1 Einsteins. The hard reflectors (17" square and Maxilite) mount very securely on the latest rev Einsteins.

Dave,
I like.
I'm looking for some reflectors that will permit washing out a white background without spilling too much into the subject.

I wonder if this is the solution.

Jerry, based on my observiations, the problematic adapters have inside diameters a bit smaller and flanges a bit deeper. That combination means that the mounting fingers can't fully return to seat against the adapter.

I have one of your rings and eli adapter on the way so will confirm.

You know how secretive I am when it comes to my "real world pics", Rob. Maybe I'll re-shoot Drea with the Maxilite:

Hair and makeup look good but the stylist should have fixed the tie before you shot.. LOL

OK Dave.. I love the 'build' pics but I think many of us would really love to SEE the light as it falls on a human's face.

Confirmed. I mounted Jerry's Elinchrom adapter to the cut down AB adapter and tried the combination with the 39-inch Rotalux deep octa. No problem at all.
