Canon 2x teleconverter : v1 -vs- v2?

Can anyone tell me the major difference between the v1 and the v2? I can only seem to find information about the v2 vs the v3, and would love to see if it's worth upgrading. I WILL say that the canon version of the 2x teleconverter had better quality than the 3rd party ones out there, plus the exif reflects the true range...

My understanding is the Canon 2x tele-coveter mkII was a complete redesigned from the mk1 and is much better. I had a mkI and it was not sharp on my sharp 300 f4

A 2x tc isn't meant to be sharp--it's going to noticeably degrade IQ vs a 1.4x tc. Plus you stuck that on a 300 f/4... which isn't exactly a stellar performer to begin with. No AF on non-1d/1ds series bodies at f/8.

While the optics were changed from the mk1 to mk2, a review I found online (with sample shots between the two), led me to believe that the mk1 shots actually looked better. There was supposed to be a new/improved coating on both mark2 TCs. The really big difference between the mk1 and mk2 is the weather sealing.

If you can pick up a mk1 under $150, it's a good buy. I've owned both of the mk1's and both of the mk2's.

That depends on the model of the 3rd party TC. For example, the DGX varieties of the Kenko TCs will report correct focal distance and lens model (in most cases).

Slight differences, to be sure. Nothing major. The optics really are nearly identical between v1/v2. The differences are too minimal to affect the choice of which you go with.
