So, I bought the 85 1.2 (not received ir yet), and knew I would be wanted a ND filter for it to open it up during daylight hours outside...............I have a few ND filters in the 77mm range and also have the Lee filter system with various filters for it.All those filters are fine, but I hate having to drag all that junk with me when I go out as most of the time I am unsure of what I will need...............Anyway, I came across some threads of people talking about the Singh-Ray Vari-ND filter and knew this is what I needed! My only worry with this on the 85 is the fact that I will need a step up ring. I am sure this has been done, but have not found any threads on it. Is the vignetting an issue? Should I go with the standard or thin mount?...............Any advise or experiance with this filter before I buy would be great!!Here is the link for people who may not know about this filter. It is a little expensive, but I think well worth the money!............... http://www.singh-ray.com/varind.html (external link)

I dont think it would be an issue. May want to call Singh-Ray and ask though. I dont have a 72 to 77mm step up ring to try it out for you.

I would not think so at this FL. I am going to go ahead and order it today, so I guess I will update this thread when I test it out. Not many must use this filter I guess?? It would not be a loss if it did not work well as I could still use it on my other 77mm lenses.

pprice: I have the Singh-Ray Vari-ND 77 and have a step-up ring to use it with the 72mm threads on the 85 f/1.2L II. No vignetting.

Before you do! https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1026781 I had a similar question the other day. I think there's a bigger model so you can use a step-down ring. I believe the thin doesn't have front threads.

I have the Vari-N-Duo which is the ND and CPL in one. I use the thin one on my 77mm lenses and no vignetting above 28mm on full frame. But as someone confirmed, look like it will work fine at 85mm on with the step-up. Good luck!

Very interested to see the results and your impression on the quality of the filter.

I have the Genus Variable ND, and like it a lot.

I got a 77mm Vari ND (Thin Mount) and tested it out last weekend. It's really nice. Very wel made with nice glass and smooth movement as you rotate it. I've experienced no vignetting on my 17-40 lens on my 7D. It's really handy to be able to adjust the amount of density. At $390, it's not cheap, but handy and easy to use if you need an ND filter.

This is one of the few things on my must have in the next month. I have a couple weddings booked this summer and one at the beach where I'll need to combat pretty harsh midday sun and it'd be nice to shoot at a wider aperture with my primes for those.

Well it did come in and I have to agree that it is very well made! The wife and I will be going on a little picnic today and it will be a nice sunny day so I will give it a go!

I did take it out of the sexy leather case and mount it to the 85L with the step up ring and the are now stuck together... I do have the tool to get them apart though :-).

I guess I should have said what was stuck together....the filter and the step up ring is, not the ring to the lens :-)

I am using the 72mm to 77mm b+w ring which I bought at b&h for 20 bucks or so.

Just use rubber bands. Also, don't put too much pressure as the step up ring is pretty thin metal and can easily bend.
