just made the leap from windows towers to an iMac....love it so far but it is a learning experience. Downloaded a HUGE card after a trip to the Smoky mountains, used my old faithful USB 1.0 reader and it took forEVER! The iMac has an 800 FW connection and USB 2.0, need a new reader, any suggestions?

LEXAR made CF FW800. I think its out of production now. Maybe $75 on ebay... I had 2 but could never get the ports on a Windows laptop to work (sold them in about 10 minutes too, so they must be popular)... So I use a card slot reader, which will do 32GB in 4 or 6 minutes...

Lexar's excellent reader that is stackable seems to be discontinued. Sandisk have one though.

The stackable disconinued one was the one I was referring to........

Caution if you look for one on EBAY, there are a lot of FW400 readers that look exactly the same........

Looks like this

I used to have a Sandisk FW800 reader that was a good deal quicker than the USB 2.0 readers I had at the time - highly recommended.

i recently had trouble finding a FW800 CF reader... I suspect that manufacturers are on the brink of offering USB3.0.

I have had a USB 3 reader for months. Definitely USB 3 is the next big transport protocol. Now that the Sandy Bridge mobos have the B3 correction, we will see more and more folks move to Sandy Bridge where many of the mobos have USB 3. My Asus mpbo has 2 USB3 ports on the back and a head for 2 more for the front.

Using USB 3 as a transport means either the card or the target HD will be the slow link in the chain...not the transport.

OP just moved from a windows box... to Mac, hence the question regarding FW800 readers and not USB 3.

As the above stated, I have USB 2.0 and an 800 FW connections, all the talk of USB 3.0 is not relevant. Unfortuately as someone stated, they seem to be unavailable for whatever reason. I will keep looking, found several in the 2-300 dollar range, too rich for me right now.

Are you using a laptop?

From what I have read the Lexar ExpressCard CompactFlash Reader is just as fast or faster than Firewire 800.

Lots of data here: http://www.robgalbraith.com …ti_page.asp?cid=6007-9392 (external link)

I use an expresscard reader... it's the fastest solution currently available.

Soon enough, we'll be using Thunderbolt - which will blow everything away. Just have to wait for the port to become more prevalent.

May I ask what brand/ model usb3.0 reader you have? I looked on eBay all I can find are those cheap ones from china

I have the Sandisk FW 800 reader. I regularly see ~50+ mb/sec. Fast enough!

I'd personally wouldn't buy the lexar FW800 card reader as i have read reports that it doesn't work with OSX 10.6.X. The sandisk is a great option at a hefty price tag, roughly $100.
