Thanks Matt. Feel free to elaborate on the crop. I am curious how this choice is visually perceived by others.

Is this crop better or worse? I was going for a little more environment in the original crop. Maybe it created more dissonance than recognition.

Maybe the width of this crop but the length of the other crop? lol.. I like the other crop, but the bit of purple in the top right corner keeps grabbing my eye.... I like the negative space though... not sure.... do you have an original out of camera crop?

Heres my comments:

Jason C - "The Day After the End" - Quite like this shot, its really good and definitely has a feeling of "emptiness" and "nothingness" about it, the only thing i dislike is the positioning of the sign ALL the way at the edge, maybe moving it over to the left a little would help the composition, Overall nice work though

airfrogusmc - "Reflected Sunset" - Again, love this shot, very "lonely" feeling, and sad for some reason, Only nitpick is i wish it was maybe 1/3 a stop brighter? but nevertheless, excellent composition and work

GarryKirsch - "Green Heron" Composition and exposure are excellent, but its very soft, Either out of focus or a heavy crop, or perhaps just the limitations of the 55-250...Sorry man

Macroshot - "Salvation Comes in a Can" - Interesting subject and good composition, ruined completely for me by the sky and lighting, Sorry

Jetcode - "Iris" - HAHA! finally a flower shot i get to judge  And its awesome, Great colors, awesome composition, overall a fantastic image, only one minor nitpick would be i would have preferred more of the flower in focus, you could have easily put the 5DII on ISO200 or 400 and stopped down to f/8 or f/11 for a bit more depth of field on the flower without affecting the isolation much, but thats a nitpick, great shot man

vmlopes' pic didnt show up for whatever reason so i cant comment on it :( sorry

kbcolorado "Chiming Bells" - (Wow! and now a macro to do! This is my week!) Awesome shot, love the "toned down" flowers as opposed to the uber-vibrant that you usually see on flowers (Not that theres anything wrong with uber-vibrant! just nice to see something different that works) love the composition and the amount of detail in it, as well as the raindrops and everything, Just works very well as a complete package with lots to savor... Great job!

Kristy "Dogtown Lake in Technicolor" Overall very nice, Kinda..feels like theres something missing to me, i think the shot needs to be just a bit wider for some reason..but overall its a very nice image and im just nitpicky...

I thought Matt was going to post our comments as a unit...

Jason C - Sorry, I don't get it so I can't really comment. Scored fairly though.

airfrogusmc - A little dark for my tastes. I think it'd look better a little brighter

Garry Kirsch - Looks like it's either OOF or a major crop.

macroshot - Obviously, conditions sucked.

jetcode - Pretty much spot on. Maybe just a tad more DOF to get the back part into focus a bit more.

vmlopes - Another great entry, Victor. Nits are very small but if you're going to centre everything, you should have taken a step to the right and lined everything up with your model in the centre of the windows. I would have preferred to see more of his face and a little less shadow on his hands/lower body.

kbColorado - Very nice. Good DOF and excellent focusing.

Kristy - 3.5 - While it's very crisp it seems to be a little flat to me.

Jason C - Sorry, I don't get it so I can't really comment. Scored fairly though.

No problem, since you are located in the great white north you probably know little about USPS affairs. The PMG is whining and moaning about falling volume (not on my route...), revenue and lack of money. The USPS wants to close some 3,000 post offices, and is still pushing for a 5 day delivery week.

My capture relates to a possible future closure, or the actual end of the USPS.

@ Kenji--I see your concern about the placement of the subject, but this composition was thought out before I clicked the button, especially in respect to "flow" and "lines". My goal was to exhibit a good portion of empty car spaces and keep the warning sign within the frame without being at the very edge.

Thank you judges for the time you have taken in your C&C, very much appreciated!

Joe, thank you from the 'other' thread.

I say take it all the way to edge. Winogrand lived at the edge with his compositions. Actually it fits quite nicely in the rule of 1/5th or sometimes called 4/5ths which many of the 35mm photographers (a lot of landscape photographers also use this rule) used because the rule of thirds became fashionable with 4X5 format and their (the 35mm photographers) thought was that was all great for the 4X5 format but that rule had the action or subject to close to the center for a 2X3 format thus the rule of 4/5ths moves the action farther out from the center making a more pleasing comp thus using more of the frame for 2X3 format. Anyway that was their thinking

In reverse order ... for some reason ... hope these comments serve you right ... if not take up complaints with Geno ... ar ar ar ar ...

dilorenzo - who are these people
Certainly love the surprise element and the uniqueness of this family portrait. The visual challenge for the viewer may lie in the glasses at the edge of the frame, the relationship between all 3 faces and the way they fit the frame format, and what appears to be slightly pasty or washed out skin tone on the out of focus faces. In general I tend to crop symmetrically which means that if the glasses are hitting the edge of the frame I might take the heads of mom and dad and push them to the top of the frame. This of course is a personal trait in my imagery. I gave this image a high score for interest and a reasonably high score for execution.

thatkatmat - West Hastings
I am a detail junkie. There ... I said it. What's not to like in this amazing shot of an amazing city? The perspective is lush because how often do you get a birds eye view from a high viewpoint of a major city center? The image appears to be duo-toned which I happen to enjoy since it provides additional visual contrast (sky tone is isolated from building tone). I rated this image as one of my favorites this week. My only comment is the struggle on the frame walls in finding an optimal crop point. Not easy with so many different shapes competing against a single edge. Well done here though.

macroshot - TunnelVision
I liked your original post so you know. This one has less appeal for me however it is well done and I like the color palette. It has a muted earth tone to it. Not sure the blacks are subtle here as the contrast is pretty high. All in all an interesting image. I almost wish the most immediate car in front of you wasn't there. The thing I hate about street shots these days is the cars have no where near the same charm as they did 40 or more years ago.

-g-
This image works for me and for one reason; scale, as shown by the people and birds (critical subject) which happen to be placed in the frame at ever so precise points. In terms of tone the contrast is low and there are no zone values above 5 or 6 which creates a subdued almost surreal setting in the eye. No doubt you could crop the sky for a more panoramic format but in fact the extra ceiling is a nice balance to the weight of the dark bank the people are walking across which serves as an anchor to the frame. Nice work.

Garry Kirsch - Landing
The capture of this gorgeous bird is the real draw. Certainly the context of vegetation provides the viewer with information concerning the environment, season, and time of day this event took place and the image is framed well, however I think I would prefer chopping off the bottom half of the frame, cloning the branch out and let the bird be seen in free flight. The subject is sharp enough to be a keeper and the light and pose are quite good.

Jason C - Asphalt Skyline
Graphically this image provides a level of interest in the movement of various tonalities in the frame. I see an impression of a high rise skyline in this however that by itself and the graphic shapes are not quite strong enough to demand a lot of attention here.
