I saw the end of the Rangers/Capitals game the other day and saw a photographer on the ice with a PocketWizard transmitter on his camera (i am new to PocketWizards). So in an area like that, where would the flashes be? Located all over the area for constant lighting?

Was thinking of learning about PocketWizards, and am sorta new to advanced photography, so thought I'd ask...

Thanks all!!

It's likely that the photographer is triggering a remote camera (often in the net (external link)) with his PWs (though he may also be triggering strobes).

Flash heads are in the rafters clamped to the catwalks or same trusses as the arena lights.

A lot of arena's have "shared" strobes in the ceilings. You set up your PW and shoot away.

What a bummer it would be to fire during someone else's recycle.

I highly doubt different photogs are sharing same set of lights.

I think they do share the house strobes. I think they are set up for it, so they can do some back to back shooting. I do not know how much, though.

Thanks for all of the replies. I was figuring that it was something in the rafters. What was funny was watching him trying not to slip on the ice... lol...

Most NHL Arenas will have three or four different sets:
- House / Team
- Local Press (if the market has a big enough paper)
- National Press (SI, Sporting News, etc)
- League Press

They'll add more if space and demand allows. TV will often supplement house lighting for the playoffs and that benefits everyone who may be "stuck" with ambient.

The one nice thing with ambient in hockey: Ice is a giant (fairly neutral) reflector...

So, Jay, do they secure them in some way, or can anyone with a Pocket Wizard set them off?

AFAIK, the usual suspects are encrypted in some manner.

I'm assuming that any additional sets that get flown are similarly protected. All of the major sports leagues have pretty aggressive control over frequency usage. I know that the Superbowl requires inspection of RF gear via ociliscope (sp?) in order to control splatter. They'll bar gear that doesn't meet spec...

This usually applies to newscrews with RF Audio equipment. Can't be stepping on Security's radios or the Ref's wireless mic! ;)

Do the PocketWizards use a frequency or range like a wireless Internet router do, or is it strictly RF?

And thanks again for all of the replies. I'm hoping to see more photographers on the ice tonite when the BRUINS WIN!!! (hopefully...)

There's a small range you can set/adjust via dip switches and then on top of that you can select channels to use. The latest and greatest version even "talks back" to confirm that the device attached actually fired.

This is a very interesting thing for me to try, even for simple remote firing, might have to try it sometime. Not in this scope, of course. I did read the article about how PocketWizard got started, was always intriguing.

Thanks again all!

There are less expensive alternatives to "Poverty Wizards." ;)
