I read in a post below that the 540EZ does not fully work with the D30. Is this so? What are the limitations or what will work?

Hi

ETTL flash will not work with the 540EZ on a D30, and as such, I wouldn't recommend it.

Try the EF500 Super Sigma.

It's almost identical to the 540ex, but $180 price.

You can get it at Adorama, I think.

Hi,

I have the EF500 Super Sigma flash (ex), and have to say I am having problems with it. It is supposed to be EX compatible, however I find all my exposures are SEVERLY overexposed. This happens in 100% auto for both D30 and flash, as well in the other modes. Even dialing in -2 flash compensation does not solve the issue (and quite frankly this is ridiculous). I am puzzled because i would assume the EX compatibility means 100%compatibility. Unless my flash is defective, I think there is a definite issue when used with the D30. I have talked to some stores and some have confirmed they have experienced similar comlaints from other customers who eventually exchange for the Canon 550ex.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues? I am in the process of exchanging for the 550ex, albeit at a much higher price. if the sigma worked 100%, then it would be an EXCELLENT flash. It appears to have all the features the 550ex has. Only other drawback is I read the ST-E2 will NOT control the Sigma, although this is unconfirmed by me.

i know this topic may be old news...

but i had the sigma EF500 also (based on all the good reviews it received) bought it from b&h photo..but never really bothered to see if it was D-30 compatible (for EOS it's fine)

once i received it...had all the same problems...there was NO way to get the exposure consistent...

once i called b&h (who are always excellent) i found out...that the EF500 does NOT work with the D-30 in ETTL mode...

exchanged it and paid another $180 for the canon 550 EX and haven't had a major problem since...

It's times like these that I love having a forum like this. I was just getting ready to order the Sigma flash as it seemed a very good deal. Now that I have read this I will wait til I can afford the 550

Thanks everyone
Chris
