Thor,
If the budget would stretch to the 1DS2 I would go that way. But when it came down to either a 1DS or a 5D, I chose the 1DS. To my eye, the 1DS files have something of a unique look. Some call it a "film-grain" look, and I think that is a fair description. At low ISO ( 50-200) it's just about total perfection, lovely detail and stunning color. At ISO400 it starts taking on a bit of grain look in saturated colors, especially blue skies. I love using it for landscape work and for portraits in the studio.
Some folks would argue that high ISO is not really very good though, so the Mk2 version would probably be a better choice if that's important. But you mentioned using it at lower ISO, so I think you would like the older version fine. And at half the cost ( 1DS vs 1DS2 ) in today's market, that leaves money for another lens, studio lights or whatever. They seem to have stalled out at around $800-$900 for the last year or so. You could probably pick one up and use it for 6 months and then sell it on for little loss if you don't like it. The same could probably be said of the 5D as well, as far as dollar value....they seem to be stuck right around a the $1K mark.
I just like the feel ( among other things, like AF and AE accuracy ) of the one series, and since I use a pair of 1DMk2 bodies as my primaries, it's nice having the same control layout on the third body too.

Main body is 1dmk2. Also got 5d as I got it cheap. Thinking of dumping it and moving to 1dsmk2. That way I don't have to struggle with AF & shutter lag issues of 5d.

The 1Ds2 is by no means a 'step back' in any way possible.

I really enjoy reading everyones input and comments regarding not only the 1DS MII I am leaning towards, but the 1DS Classic if you will and the 5D also. I definitely haven't ruled out the 1DS or 5D but have a few concerns regarding each.
If I would go with a 1DS and if a problem would arise, would Canon be able to repair it such as if the shutter would fail? On a 1D a $400-$500 paperweight is one thing but I don't know if the wife would like a $800-$900 mantlepiece.:(
Other than that concern I don't question the IQ of the original 1DS whatsoever.
On the 5D my biggest concern would be having to rely on the center point focusing for moving/darting kids. I love looking at the 5D Classic thread and particularly the shots taken with the 135L. I think the IQ is second to none with that body also.

dandan1, I meant back in time such as 2005, not image quality of course.:)

I suspect you will be able to get shutters replaced on all these bodies for quite some time down the road. If not thru official canon service, then thru independent shops. Now, disclaimer here......that is a flat out GUESS on my part. I have no inside knowledge or contact at canon service nor the mothership.
Eventually it's gonna malfunction though at some level to the point of having to be retired. The real question is, how many great photos will you get out of it before it dies.

Like someone mentioned before the 5D has 6 'invisible' AF points that are only used in AI Servo. They are 2 row of 3 both above and below the center point focus and all fall within the spot metering circle. The 5D will automatically shift the point if the subject happens to move away from the center point. If you look at a 5D manual online it will explain it better. This was a real help shooing my wife's tri where I was not experienced in panning. Out of the ~800 action shots I took only about 20 or less were OOF. Yes the 1D will be better, but the 5D still performed really well for me.

Here is an example with the new 70-200 with her being away from center, but still tracking as she passed
