I'd do it just because of the trade values.

I disagree.
If the OP really wants to try to get profit from the trade, it'll take up more work, time, and effort than you would expect to gain ~$150 or whatever.

Though you would have more of a range with the 24-105, I personally would keep your current lens because they are faster and the 17-50 is a good lens.
Unless you prefer the IS over the wider aperture, and maybe more flexible range, then go with the trade

And please don't get the 24-105 just because it's an "L" lens. It's the most ridiculous excuse I hear everywhere.

set your tamron to 24mm to see if you could deal with that as your wide...since you'd have nothing else wider...

Prior to March, maybe. Not anymore. $900-$1000 here. Do your due diligence--I know I've been watching the prices.

did you miss the ones last week that went for 850, and 860...there's not one for 1,000...950's the high...most are 850-900...

the 50f1.4 had a huge jump in new price...resulting in people asking for more used...the same can't be said for the 24-105 though

If the 24-105 would become my widest and fastest lens, I couldn't do it on a crop frame. If I had a 5Dc/mkII, then it would be another story.

That's their problem if they choose to sell lower than the going rate. The two you reference--those sold quickly. Look at the sale just before and after those two--they sold for $950 and $960 respectively. Those are the prices people SHOULD be shooting for.

And the prices for the 24-105 have in fact gone up since March:

On a crop, it would be a good idea to pair the 24-105L with something like the Tamron 17-50mm :D

i don't care what they choose to sell at...but they are selling at the price(850) mentioned...some people prefer a quick sale to getting the most money back...

as for the 24-105L going up a bit...it's nothing like the ridiculous jump of the 50mm...going from 350 new to nearly 500 new isn't the same as going from 1100-1200...

Well, I think I'm going to sleep on it. I am thinking 24-105 strictly because of the range and build quality. Since getting my 85, my 17-50 has just been sitting inside the bag. Maybe I will trade the 17-50 for a wide prime and keep my 85. :)

Well, $450 to be fair. But a 30% increase is absolutely insane, of course. It confounds me how the price can jump so much in a short month.

It depends what you want to do. I wouldn't do it unless you purely want to make a profit. From a phorography perspective, the 24-105 won't replace what you can do with your current lenses.

It can certainly complement it though. The 24-105 is an excellent walk-around lens in daylight, when you're not intended to encounter much action. It's also a good performer in moderately dark lighting. The 3-stop stabilizer vs the loss of a single stop from an f/2.8 lens (24-70L namely) can make all the difference when handholding in a dark setting--mammoth caves with the flash off for instance. Handheld shots at 1/10-1/25 are doable. The same is not possible with an f/2.8 lens without stabilization. I found this out the hard way :D

True, but the question is, is 24mm wide enough for the OP as a walk around. I personally need my 17mm and 2.8 for my walk around lens (If I only have one lens with me) since I like shooting portraits at 55mm 2.8 and doing some wide shots as well :)

Might be a great trade depending on shooting style but 85mm 1.8 and 17-50mm 2.8 is really nice combo imo. the 85 is such an amazing lens.

Go for the deal. You will love the 24-105 and not miss the 17-50. If you really feel you need something wider, pick up a Tokina 11-16 or Sigma 10-20. They're both nice and relatively inexpensive.
I say this because I did pretty much the same thing. Sold my Tamron 17-50 and a 50mm f/1.4 and bought the 24-105. It has become my go-to lens for almost all occasions and will even do reasonably good macro.

Believe in your heart that something wonderful is about to happen.

Personally, I can live with it, even on a crop. At 24mm, the difference between a FF & crop, I can just take a few steps. I keep my tokina 11-16mm around for those special occasions, but seriously, it's too wide for the vast majority of things.

i love my 24-105 so i am biased in saying "yes!"
but have you used the lens? indoors? if you shoot indoors, know that the drop of the stops is significant. your flash can make up for some of it for sure, but sometimes flash isn't in your plan....
I use the 24-105 for 85% of my pictures simply because I love the range and convenience
YMMV

just as aside: i am missing the wider end sometimes....but I find that I am looking more towards the 11-16 rather than the missing 17-23 range.... but that is personal
