I would like to extend the range of my builtin G2 lens. Shoild I buy the Canon 1.5 teleconverter or one from a 3rd party ? Can anyone recommend a good one ? Any pitfalls if I add it on ? New to this topic !

I have been researching this myself. I have decided to go with the Kenko KNT-20. Image quality seems good and no vignetting at full zoom. I have a Lensmate adapter but this will need a step ring to attach the telephoto.

Nick.

I have purchased the KNT-20 from www. lensmateonline.com and I'm more than happy with the quality. For a start its cheaper than the canon 1.5
and has the added distance.

I also use the lensmate adapter along with polariser, UV, ND filters. Susan of Lensmate is on the ball with delivery taking 5 days to get the goods to OZ.

I tried initially inquiring at local shops in Sydney and they give me a month or more waiting for the product. No enthusiasm to boot.

some images I have taken with the Kenko

If you can find an Olympus A200 it works well with the G2 and lensmate adaptor. See this thread

I have just posted some test photos with my G1 and a KNT-20, if you're interested. I use a lensmate 52mm adaptor.

Thanx. I'm new at this, sorry for all the ?'s. Can you suggest where to buy these and the exact part names/#'s for the:

Kenko 52mm adapter
Kenko KNT-20 teleconverter

I assume you take the threaded ring off of the front of the G2 and install the adapter, and then attach the TC to that adapter ? Does the zoom on the G2 still work, but the extire range is now 2X multiplied ?

There are a lot of stores who carry it now, I got mine at the Filter Connection (http://www.2filter.com/kenko/Kenkodigital.html (external link)) for $77 plus $7 shipping. Their part number is KENKNT20. I also bought the lens tube there for $12
"46.5mm-52mm Tube for Canon Digital G1-G2 KEN46552T ". It's brushed silver and while not a perfect match looks really nice. Don't forget to buy a UV filter for ~ $23 (Hoya SMC 52mm UV SMC52UV)-- it goes a long way towards protecting your lens from scratches, dust, etc!

Other companies (ie Globalmart, B&H, etc) all carry the same or similar items and the prices will vary. Watch out for huge differences in shipping though -- I found everything from $7 to $31 for the same item. Some of the rival tubes are plastic, I prefer the aluminum.

Here is a picture of the lens itself: http://www.globalmart.com/page/k/knt_20.htm (external link)

To answer your questions:

- yes you remove the ring to install
- I leave the tube and UV filter on all the time, helps protect the camera lens.
- The filter has an "inside" 52mm thread as well, so I just screw the KNT-20 directly onto it.
- No it doesn't interfere with the lens for the G1/G2 although I've read there might be a problem with the G3.
- You should use the KNT-20 from full zoom back to where the vignetting starts (around 14mm).

Good luck.

p.s. where in Australia? I visited NSW recently.
