For 50 years, presidential photographers have covered it all:
upheaval, tragedy, joy — often developing friendships with the presidents they serve.
Acting as both visual historians and key links between the public and the presidents,
for these photographers no day is the same — whether they are aboard Air Force One,
backstage at the State of the Union or in the heart of the West Wing.

As the 44th president's chief photographer, Pete Souza is never far behind President Obama.
In this National Geographic Special, The President's Photographer, viewers can follow Souza,
and those who came before him, for a behind-the-scenes look at the everyday grit
of the American presidency.

I just noticed today that the White House (Pete Souza, the White House photographer, a Canon 5D user) has a Flickr page (external link).

The guy is really talented, he uploads his images at very high resolution and includes captions in the EXIF data and the flickr comments.

This post is not political (and please do not make it so in replies). Whether or not you like the POTUS -- White House Photographer is a cool job and Pete Souza does it very well! The page is worth a look.

I made him a contact so I would get notified when he uploads new photos.

This is, in fact, Pete's 2nd tour of duty as OWHP. The first time, the POTUS was from across the aisle...

Further proof that this is about photography, not politics. :)

It is funny, though, you can often tell which way a particular new organization leans.. they tend to use photographs of the other side that makes them look dopey, while pictures of candidates or politicians from their side look heroic. (No examples please, that would get political.)

The documentary is on Netflix. No matter your politics it's a good watch.

saw this earlier An interesting story of a working photographer Odd life every time the shutter opens the image is public property. He is forbidden to delete anything I'd find that tough.

It's not anywhere as big a problem for him as it is for the person or people who have to do the editing and archiving!

IIRC, he and his assistants (that they show) shoot north of 30,000 frames per month!

All, Property of the National Archives the second the photons hit the sensor.

That is is very tough.. I shoot a ton of event photography and award ceremonies. About 2-3 every week. Groups of people always fidget, blink, look the wrong way. I end up snapping 10 frames and deleting 9 and it's still not totally right. I'm no future Pete Souza!

Is Pete the photographer who's using Holgas, etc as well as digital gear?

I like making photos and sometimes I think I'm getting better... then I realise it doesn't matter. I like making photos!
