So I have money for the Canon 15-85mm, is there any reason I should not buy the Tamron 17-50mm instead?

Thank you for the help?

PS: Will I be shooting in low light? Fromm time to time, yes, but mainly used for landscape and street shots.

This lens will be used on the Canon 60D.

Thank you!

There is no such thing as an all purpose lens.

Sorry for wording that wrong. What I meant to say, an all purpose lens for that focal length.

Not super familiar with the Tamron but I would think the 15-85mm would be money for your purposes. Sometimes, I wish I had purchased it over the 17-55mm.

I love my Tamron 17-50mm, but with that said there are many times that I find it too short. The 15-85mm gives you a pretty nice all around range.

I'd rather have a constant 2.8, but the added range of the 15-85 would be nice sometimes. That's really the question for you...do you want a wider & constant aperture or do you want extra focal length?

Probably the 15-85 is the best for that FL.

I shot these in pretty low light... hope these help you make up your mind :)

I think having a sharp f2.8 zoom is better than the extra focal range

XSi (450D) and Tamron 17-50 2.8

at f2.8

You might want to look at shots you have previously taken and see what FL you use the most. Without knowing what you currently use it's hard to know how a different lens would slot-in or replace what you have now. If you don't do much low light shooting then FL may be more important. But honestly that's only something you can decide as you know what you shoot the most and under what lighting conditions.

I had, and loved the Tamron. I replaced it with a Canon 17-55IS f/2.8, and thats just been replaced with a 15-85.
Its early days yet but while i think the 17-55IS (and Tamron) are a bit sharper than the 15-85, i think for outdoor shooting the 15-85 is a better all rounder. The 2mm difference between 17mm and 15mm is quite noticeable, and its nice to have a bit more reach without having to change lenses.
It still has IS so its not completely useless in low light, as long as your shooting static scenes then its going to work fine.

Also, with the 60D i dont think its a big deal if you have to shoot at high ISO's, the images clean up very nicely.

Have you considered a compromise between the 2, the sigma 17-70 2.8-4 OS?
I just got this lens yesterday after making that same decision you are now making, 15-85 for the range, or a 17-50 zoom for the 2.8.

Between the 2 you mentioned, I would go for the 15-85 because I can always use a fast prime for low light shooting, whereas I always found my kit lens somewhat lacking in range, so getting a 17-50 wouldn't fix that problem.

I have an EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS for sale that is good in low light, is a good all around lens, and has a great range perfect as an all-round lens. It would be perfect for your 60D. I can give you a link to pix from it (with my 40D) if you are interested. PM me if you want the link.

you can get a tamron 17-50 F 2.8 and a 15-85 for the same price as one canon 17-55 if you really want that aperture and range .
