I've had some trouble since the get-go with this camera but today stunned me, as I thought I shot a great series of cardinal shots, only to discover the red was over-saturated and blotchy. I was using the 500mm + 1.4 TC and it was a rainy day, ISO at 1250, no biggie for this camera. All the shots are garbage with splotchy over-saturated areas. I'm wondering if anyone else has ever encountered this? Here's a link to one of the shots: http://www.flickr.com …5662301487/in/photostream (external link)

I also have an AF issue, where sometimes the camera will not focus, although I'm not sure if this is the camera or lens. I've sent it to Canon twice, and they say nothing is wrong with it.

Doesn't look like a blown red channel or anything. Overall, I think it's a nice image. You sure it's not just the bird's natural uneven color? I will trust your judgement as you're looking at them at a much larger scale, but on my calibrated monitor, it looks fine.

Looks fine to me too...perhaps your monitor is the issue?

Be happy! ;)

I cropped another shot so you can see the extent of the problem....

Perhaps you have a wide gamut monitor and aren't color managing?

I calibrated my monitor but maybe I will do it again. In the winter I had no problem shooting red, this seems to be something new...

Looks fine to me, the DOF isn't larger so you lose detail very quickly, its a small crop and its ISO 1250. I don't see anything out of the ordinary.

On my monitor, it's definitely red, but I'm not seeing blotches. I still see the detail in the feathers. Did you accidentally change color space or something?

Ultimately, you definitely don't seem happy though. Maybe send it in while it's still under warranty?

What do you have the camera set to? Are you shooting JPEGs on the Vivid setting - eg landscape? Why not shoot RAW and manage the colors in post?

I looked into that a while back and decided to use sRBG across the board, for compatibility with web and printing. I wish I didn't delete the images from my card!

I always shoot in raw, import into Lightroom, where I do a few adjustments, then the rest in Photoshop. I must be buggering something up, but have no idea where. Any adjustment to these shots pp just makes it worse, there's no fixing it as far as I can see.

Well, from the few comments from folks here, the images don't look that bad. Maybe take a shot at re-calibrating your monitor. Also, try making a print and see how the printer picks up the reds.

It's been a tough run...I dropped my gear (I mean the camera, the 500mm lens and TC) off my deck last summer shooting jays with two cameras....btw, I definitely don't recommend using two cameras at once.

Anyway, I took it to Canon and they fixed it, but there always seems to be something wrong, at least IMHO! I took it back twice, they sent it back saying nothings wrong. The saturation issue may be something I'm doing wrong, but I could get a better shot of that cardinal with my P&S...

Back to the drawing board....

Thank you all for trying to help.

I think your images are fine; these examples don't show any blown colors for me. I have the same problem with reds, though, at home.

I have a bunch of flower shots from this last weekend that look totally shot at home but don't look so bad on my monitor at work.

Without seeinfg the full size image, the areas circled seem to resemble pixel clumping which are a symptom of over saturation.
