Anyone jealous of the upcoming Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens?

I don't know if everyone has heard but Nikon has just released a new 50mm f1.8 with an MSRP of $220.
http://www.nikonusa.com …KKOR-50mm-f%252F1.8G.html (external link)

From the specs, it has an asperical element, ultrasonic motor with full time manual focus, 7 around aperture blades, a window scale, their new lens coating, and even comes with a hood and a bag.

Thom Hogan at his site states that looking at the MTF chart that this may be Nikon's sharpest 50mm lens?

I quickly looked at the Canon 50mm f1.4 and it's selling for $450 at B&H sans full time manual, round aperture blades, hood, bag, asperical element.

I wish Canon would start to play catch up here as a cheap 50mm fast prime is a great lens for everyone to have to learn photography/composition with.

Just a rant. I feel better now.

$220 is still twice as expensive as the Canon.

Yes but the nifty doesn't have FTM, nor USM, nor rounded aperture blades, nor a hood, nor a window scale, nor a bag, nor an aspherical element, and the build quality is naff :)

That said its well worth $100, but I do wish canon would update it or update the 50 1.4 with better build etc...

Hopefully this lens doesn't have the lovely feature of having the front element fall off like the Canon.

I'd pay $220 for a ring USM equipped 50mm/1.8 that was not soft wide open and which could focus accurately.

Canon EF 50/1.8 II - Cannot focus accurately and not especially sharp wide open. Cheap
Canon EF 50/1.4 - Cannot focus accurately and not especially sharp wide open. Not Cheap.
Canon EF 50/1.2L USM - Accurate and fast to focus. Reasonable sharpness below f/2. Expensive.

I'd love a slower lens than the 50L that kept the fast and accurate AF but traded the huge aperture for a slower lens with lower price.

Canon really should try to make a decent 50mm lens...

I loved shooting with my FD 50 1.8 and AE-1.... the EF 50 1.8? Straight up garbage compared to the FD version in my opinion. I'd gladly pay twice the price to get one like this quality.

I have the 50mm f1.8 Mark II (AKA thrifty fifty). I'd pay another $50 just to have either 7 or 9 round aperture blades.

I am, hopefully Canon responds, it looks like it's going to be a great lens. $220 is an amazing deal for such an overall package, hell even Canon's expensive 1.4 doesn't offer as much.

I'm not jealous because I have never been interested in a 50mm prime either on crop or full frame...but I do like the idea.
