I wish Canon would start to play catch up here as a cheap 50mm fast prime is a great lens for everyone to have to learn photography/composition with.

A Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lens captured these images.

In actual use with subjects that moved uncontrollably, the lens showed no shortcomings. It went on the camera, the shutter button was pushed and it generated these images. No feelings of jealousy from these quarters.

Yes, I think the original Canon EF 50 mm options bellow USD 1000 are not good.
I own the three 50mm f1.4 and 1.8 versions.
My EF 50mm f/1.4 have these AF issues. Bought it used, and in the first years I didn´t know that one should use a bajonett type hood, and better no filters.

I am very happy now with an old manual Minolta Rokkor 58/1.2 which I hase converted to EF mount. That is good for me - and cost me roughly the same like a new EF 50/1.8II back then :-)

But sometimes I have to give advices to other photographers. The EF50/1.8 II is good for the price - but it is not a lens I could fall in love with, to much plastic, cost optimized. Not rigid enough for me. But the last is the same with the EF 50/1.4. Looks much better than the 50/1.8II, but seems not to be really much better.

Probably an EF 50/1.4 II will start soon?

But I am not sure, if an aspherical element is best - don´t like the bokeh of these sometimes.

Canon really should try to make a decent 50mm lens...

+1

And if you look at the MTF charts for the new Nikon 50 its sharper than the 50mm f/1.4G which isnt considered a bad lens!

the new 50 should be a stonker

I'd pay $220 gladly for a well built sharp 50mm f/1.8 with a lens hood ring-type USM and etc...Will Canon make it? probubly not....

Heck I'd wish Canon would upgrade their 50mm f/1.4 even with a proper USM focusing motor and etc....

But then again if Canon did it would be an $850 lens with a $50 optional lens hood and case most likely, or a $1000 L lens...

I paid 250 for a pristine mkI 50mm f/1.8. That being said it's still garbage compared to the nikon lens. I've owned the nikon 35mm f/1.8 and it was simply amazing. Build quality was incredible and focused instantly. Much better in both respects than the canon 50s

both sides (Canon & Nikon) will have shortcomings compared to the other in some respects. if you are on one side and noticing all of the flaws and shortcomings of that side....maybe it's time to switch sides ;-)a

I don't know if everyone has heard but Nikon has just released a new 50mm f1.8 with an MSRP of $220.
http://www.nikonusa.com …KKOR-50mm-f%252F1.8G.html (external link)

From the specs, it has an asperical element, ultrasonic motor with full time manual focus, 7 around aperture blades, a window scale, their new lens coating, and even comes with a hood and a bag.

Thom Hogan at his site states that looking at the MTF chart that this may be Nikon's sharpest 50mm lens?

I quickly looked at the Canon 50mm f1.4 and it's selling for $450 at B&H sans full time manual, round aperture blades, hood, bag, asperical element.

I wish Canon would start to play catch up here as a cheap 50mm fast prime is a great lens for everyone to have to learn photography/composition with.

Just a rant. I feel better now.

No.

Do you also rant when your neighbor brings home a new car, and your car doesn't match up to his??

Stop worrying about the neighbor people!

I'm not jealous because I have never been interested in a 50mm prime either on crop or full frame...but I do like the idea.

same here, and even if I did want a 50mm lens - there's plenty to choose from, why would you care about Nikon lenses?

The cheap 50mm lenses have historically had hideous bokeh. To me, sharpness is pretty low on the list of priorities in a lens, while bokeh is near the top.

Maybe the new Nikon 50 1.8 is sharp, but the jury is still out on the bokeh quality.

Also, many people have been complaining about focusing accuracy and speed with the new AF-S primes from Nikon, which is why I held back in buying some.

Nobody delivers a slam dunk. Get the most out of what you got and what you CAN get for your system and you will win.

I'd pay for it.

I'm not really a fan of the current Canon offerings. Many times I've said that I'm going to nab the 50 1.8, but every time I get it in my hands I always back off. I don't like the 50mm focal length enough to justify spending $500ish on the 1.4 or Sigma versions either...

I'm still holding onto my theory that canon is going to release a new 50mm 1.4 very soon. It's not a new sexy lens so it probably isn't getting any attention, but I have this feeling....

Heres my "conspiracy" theory: A lot of online retailers' prices are controlled by computer algorithms that increase/decrease prices automatically based on various factors (like supply, current demand, competitor prices, etc.) The 50 1.4 has only gradually increased in price in the last decade. Then all of a sudden it shot up (yes I know of the situation in japan, but we didn't see nearly the same degree of increase for other lenses.) I think canon has stopped making this lens, supplies are running out, so prices are driven up. Then all of a sudden, out of apparently nowhere, they will announce the new 50! And photogs will rejoice.

I totally agree with you. It seems that a lot of people in here only look at the center sharpness which really means nothing. I mean how often do you place the subject in the center anyway? When it comes to fast lenses bokeh is waay more important because often the blurred background and foreground make up for most part of the image.

Though I do disagree with you about the new Nikon 50mm. It will have 7 rounded aperture blade which says quite a lot or at least create much much better bokeh than that piece of crap nifty fifty which only has 5 regular aperture blades that creates hideous bokeh.

+1 I as well agree with this, The sharpness is still exciting though..but i bought my Sigma for its awesome Bokeh...

I think a lot of our complaints stem from Nikon releasing TWO new 50s now and Canon hasnt even given us ONE, the old 50mm f/1.4 is in desperate need of a mechanical upgrade (And heck, its bokeh can be pretty iffy at times) at least...

Though then again i do have to agree that fast 50s despite their optical simplicity seem to be a lens thats hard to get "right"
