I'd pay $220 for a ring USM equipped 50mm/1.8 that was not soft wide open and which could focus accurately.

Canon EF 50/1.8 II - Cannot focus accurately and not especially sharp wide open. Cheap
Canon EF 50/1.4 - Cannot focus accurately and not especially sharp wide open. Not Cheap.
Canon EF 50/1.2L USM - Accurate and fast to focus. Reasonable sharpness below f/2. Expensive.

I'd love a slower lens than the 50L that kept the fast and accurate AF but traded the huge aperture for a slower lens with lower price.

My 50 1.4 is accurate and sharp wide open :]

And im getting a 50L soon ... so i dont want that nikon toy ever.

Hi, its Danny.

^- The Canon 50mm f/1.4 has a lot of sample variation i see, I have seen some that are GREAT wide open, others much less so, My copy wasnt good until f/2.8...at which point my 17-55 outperformed it and had IS to boot, so i sold it

My 50 1.4 was acceptable until it quit focusing---and canon wanted nearly the cost of a new one to repair it:rolleyes:

If Canon could come out with a 50mm 1.8 with those features and have accurate, consistent autofocus, and the same price; I would buy it in a New York minute!

6D, 5D, 7Dii, Eos R and too many lenses, flashes and aux. gear to list!

nikon is doing a great job with their new 35mm and 50mm entry level primes. nikon is even under-cutting sigma in these focal lengths. canon really needs to get their acts together.

all of you who are perfectly happy with your canon 50mm f1.4, good for you... but really, you all might wanna go try something else and see for yourselves.

I did wish Canon made this... sigh... something I can whole heartily recommend to students.

I also agree with Kenji, I wish they would included basics with their lenses like hoods. Even some $800+ lenses do not come with hoods, WTF Canon?!

I am actually really jealous of Nikon's 35mm f/1.8 crop-sensor lens. I ended up getting a Canon 28mm f/1.8, but had to spend a lot more than $200!

I was this close to buying a Nikon 3100 for this cheap lens, but the video capabilities on the T2i (as well as $100 discount), swung me Canon's way. Now I am enraged again at Canon's poor selection of high-quality cheap primes...

My 50 1.4 is accurate and sharp wide open :]

Maybe, but the colour rendition wide open is muddy and bokeh is poor compared to the Sigma 1.4. Build quality is pitiful compared to the Sigma. Shame my Sigma is so choosy about the bodies I attach it to :(

I'm really not sure it's too much to ask for Canon to update the 1.4 to make it a more solid offering. Canon's non-L primes are looking decidedly jaded these days with the odd exception here and there.
