I've got the Nifty mark I and really love it. That said, I've long argued for a mark III from Canon pretty much along the lines of what Nikon has done. As annoying to use as the mk II is, the mk I is a joy--amazing what build quality does. Just the thought of a 7-blade aperture and USM makes me giddy.

I'm jealous of these pro photogs that can take these crap lenses we talk about and still produce amazing photographs ;-)a

I have a good friend that produced an amazing portfolio of work and had several large exhibits and she shot the entire project with a holga.

Count me in as jealous.

I'd be happy if Canon redesigned either one of the 50 1.8 or 1.4. I don't see the sense in upgrading my nifty until then - although I am strongly considering the Sigmalux.

I don't know if everyone has heard but Nikon has just released a new 50mm f1.8 with an MSRP of $220.

From the specs, it has an asperical element, ultrasonic motor with full time manual focus, 7 around aperture blades, a window scale, their new lens coating, and even comes with a hood and a bag.

Thom Hogan at his site states that looking at the MTF chart that this may be Nikon's sharpest 50mm lens?

I quickly looked at the Canon 50mm f1.4 and it's selling for $450 at B&H sans full time manual, round aperture blades, hood, bag, asperical element.

I wish Canon would start to play catch up here as a cheap 50mm fast prime is a great lens for everyone to have to learn photography/composition with.

Just a rant. I feel better now.

A) The Canon 50mm f/1.4 has FTM. It always did.
B) The Canon 50mm f/1.4 also has 6 blades and looks great.

Hood you can buy. Big Deal.
Bag? for a small lens like that... waste.

The big deal is the aspherical element. But if you're so sold by just that... get the Sigma 50mm f/1.4.

As far as comparing the two... don't... the Canon 50/1.4 will still beat the Nikon 50/1.8... its an f/1.4!

And if you feel its been "one-upped" realize the 50/1.4 dates back to 1990 without changes... and YES, its "due"... but NO, its not yet out.

Frankly, there is only ONE 50mm f/1.8 I'd drop over $100 on, and its the Zeiss Contax 50mm f/1.7.

Nikon could give it a button that played music and it'd still be a 50mm f/1.8.

Its the principle that competing companies give you these things for free on just about every lens and Canon is being a stingy #%%^ and refusing to include them, It makes me feel like im being nickel and dimed to death by them...
