If you don't spend it now, you will just have to spend more later!

Heh, I just got up :D Lenses are getting so expensive! I am trying to convince my wife to let me buy a ton of lenses before they get more expensive. I was using the 1D4 as an example. I could have gotten one for around $3900 last year, now it is around $5500. Hopefully the finance logic in her clicks :p

I think it would be a good idea if you feel you need the focal length oppose to getting it for the heck of getting it.

Thank you! I am so ready to get this over with, I want to shoot! I am shooting some senior prom photos tomorrow... soo excited to shoot! I haven't shot in weeks :(

That's true... I am not sure when this bubble will end but hopefully it won't get too expensive before I could afford the 800mm :lol:

seriously I am trying very hard to get everything that I wrote in my sig before the year ends... I hope they are still very reasonably priced before the year ends :lol:

if you include the 800mm :lol:

I don't ever plan to get that w/ a single lens... I am thinking more of like

300mm f/4 + 2x TC + 1 crop body = 900mm f/8 :lol::lol:

I totally misread 300mm f4 to 300mm f2.8 lol. Ok, thats only like $6.5k ish...

I want a 500 f4... thats kind of my dream telephoto.

500f4 + 1.4x tc + crop body = 1120mm :D

I have no desire for the 400 f5.6. No IS, no weather sealing, and can't use a TC since most Canon cameras lose AF past f5.6.

For me, it is 500 f4 or bust!

I actually don't get the "Lose AF past f/5.6" thing... why? I mean I always shoot at f/8 or smaller w/ AF :confused::confused:

but yes if you could afford the 500mm then why settle for less :lol:

I can explain

Your lens' aperture does not actually change when you change the setting on your camera. It only constricts when you actually take the picture. When you look through the view finder, the lens is always wide open. (Hence the purpose of the DOF preview button to actually close the aperture)

However stuff like teleconverters cause the lens to lose light even when you are not taking the picture because it is not the actual aperture of the lens restricting the light.

The AF sensor requires a certain amount of light to function. When the max aperture of a lens drops below 5.6, most Canon cameras lose AF because the amount of actual light getting to the sensor is too low for the camera to consistently achieve focus.
