I can explain

Your lens' aperture does not actually change when you change the setting on your camera. It only constricts when you actually take the picture. When you look through the view finder, the lens is always wide open. (Hence the purpose of the DOF preview button to actually close the aperture)

However stuff like teleconverters cause the lens to lose light even when you are not taking the picture because it is not the actual aperture of the lens restricting the light.

The AF sensor requires a certain amount of light to function. When the max aperture of a lens drops below 5.6, most Canon cameras lose AF because the amount of actual light getting to the sensor is too low for the camera to consistently achieve focus.

ahh yes I understand the focusing wide open until you click the shutter button and the lens change its aperture to your desired setup..

so you mean to say if I bought a 2x TC.. my camera will be focusing at f/8 instead of f/4? hmmmm ok now I see the problem in not so good light

Thanks Will... I just read some reviews on B&H and Adorama about it right now... it does AF with the 2x TC

I have no idea what the AF limit on Nikons are. I know Canon 1D and 1Ds series focus up to f8 so maybe your D700 will be fine :D

There are airlines I will happily pay a fraction more, to avoid :D

American Airlines falls into that category for me, as of right now.

looks like it will focus...but slower than using the 1.4 TC and getting f/5.6 aperture..

now I am not looking at it very nicely anymore.. the 800mm f/5.6 is looking very attractive ;)

I am better off getting the 70-200mm VRII + 2x TC + crop body = 600mm

I should be able to live with that for now

Yep, very short, American's aircraft tend to get off the runway then plummet into something shortly afterwards ;)

LR3 question, how do I check where the focus was on the image< this is one way I verify that the face of the celebrity is not soft, there is a command in Aperture 3 view for this.

I don't believe there is a command to show the focus points in LR3. I usually just zoom in to 1:2 or 1:1 and assess the image for focus accuracy.

Tony Light Room does not support this function. Aperture does. Someone was working on a plug in for lightroom to showcase focus point but never completed it.

I agree. Overall i prefer lightroom over Aperture but not having the focus points is a serious flaw. Your only option would be zoom browser outside of Aperture

Agreed. Its ridiculous if you think about it. Thats almost an Apple move. Leave something obvious out so you can call it a new magical feature later
