wow man!!! I have not been using any AF mode at all except single point continuous
its a shame I am not using one of the D700's strength
Nikon cameras shows it as well in camera Tony... only time I find it useful is if you wanna check your camera's AF

ain't that what they teach around here? 
I use the different focus types on my 7D for different situations. I never rely just on single point. If im shooting sports or anything thats moving a lot i will switch over to zone focusing. I have the 7D set up so it doesn't jump focus fast when something gets in front of my focused subject. This way it maintains lock as my point of focus moves through the frame. I use single point when shooting stagnant objects only.
Here is a shot using zone focus and ai servo:

I waited for him to fly through my area of focus and then took the shot. All the points were right on his upper body but they lit up as he went through the frame.
You should try it some time steven. You have a great focus system on your camera
