wow man!!! I have not been using any AF mode at all except single point continuous  its a shame I am not using one of the D700's strength

Nikon cameras shows it as well in camera Tony... only time I find it useful is if you wanna check your camera's AF

yeap same here  ain't that what they teach around here?

I use the different focus types on my 7D for different situations. I never rely just on single point. If im shooting sports or anything thats moving a lot i will switch over to zone focusing. I have the 7D set up so it doesn't jump focus fast when something gets in front of my focused subject. This way it maintains lock as my point of focus moves through the frame. I use single point when shooting stagnant objects only.

Here is a shot using zone focus and ai servo:

_MG_4525.jpg (external link) by Prodigy83 (external link), on Flickr

I waited for him to fly through my area of focus and then took the shot. All the points were right on his upper body but they lit up as he went through the frame.

You should try it some time steven. You have a great focus system on your camera :)

I don't know about Nikons either!

But some interesting info: the AF on the 1D bodies does work down to f/8 but for the rest it is disabled beyond f/5.6 but this is done electronically when the camera gets "info" from the teleconverter -- the TC "reports" that it is connected and so the camera turns off the AF. On the 1D bodies, at f/8 all but the center AF point are disabled.

People who like to mess with things turn off this "reporting" by taping over a pin on the contacts of the TC. That way the camera can AF. I've never done that -- for one thing I don't like to use TCs on "slow" lenses and figured that using them "improperly" won't do any favors to getting good results. But also, some TCs don't report -- I used to use the old 70-300 IS lens with the 30D and had a TC that would have disabled AF but as it turns out didn't report. So, the combo got AF but with not-so-good results.

But I do push things -- I told you guys about my birds yesterday and I used a TC with the 100-400 for that on the 1D3, meaning it had an f/8 aperture (I actually stopped down to f/11 for the shooting). That's one of the nice things about the 1D bodies, is that you can do that!

For those who haven't seen the results, I got some decent shots -- they took some sharpening in Lightroom, and I still needed to closely crop, but at least they weren't painful to look at. Here's the link if you haven't seen it and got bored:

Tony my wallet has vetoed my ability to see your link for fear of me wanting a 1d body

Hey Tony... apparently on Nikon it is not disabled..so its up to the camera if it can attain focus or not with the available light even past f/8

hmmm I should try and learn to use the different AF modes... I am pretty sure I tried the Dynamic 3D and I almost went nuts  AF point jumps from left to right and all over the frame hehehe

there is no Zone focusing on the D700 Omar...but I always use Single Point AI Servo...

hmmm I'll give the D700's 51 point tomorrow  lemme see what do you think I could shoot that the Tamron 28-75mm can catch w/ Dynamic AF? ahhahaha

As good as it is i like the selective noise reduction i do in noise ninja. I also sharpen my images in CS5 only as well. Again it has to do with the selective work flow i have. I have actions setup up for everything so it does it quickly and exports right back to LR with no problem.

Hmm im not familar with the D700 but ive heard the 3d focus system works well. So on the D700 you can only select all 51 points active or 1 point? No segment selection?

Have you ever held down i believe "shift" while sharpening in LR? It will allow you to apply sharping as you wish. It turns the image black and anything in white will get the sharpening leaving everything else untouched. I think it turns it into unsharp mask.

Ill try to find a link.

 Yeah i run selective NR and Selective sharpening. I dont do it to an extreme. Just a touch of it and thats it but it makes a very big difference. However, it wouldnt matter at all if the SOOC was crap

Hmm. In the 7D you can select 4 different groups of points. But your focusing system is awesome anyway. Dont worry about grouping. Play around with it. Use all 3 options and see which one works :) Great for children shots when they are running around :)
