I found the link Will:

http://help.adobe.com …2e081210db09b94-7fef.html (external link)

As you can see at the bottom of it:

Press Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) while dragging a slider to see the areas being affected (white) versus the areas masked out (black).

I do this all the time. I hate! universal sharpening!

As good as it is i like the selective noise reduction i do in noise ninja. I also sharpen my images in CS5 only as well. Again it has to do with the selective work flow i have. I have actions setup up for everything so it does it quickly and exports right back to LR with no problem.

I am a pretty stubborn goat -- I like to stick Lightroom and just my Raw files unless I have to go to Photoshop, which doesn't happen often.

So, yeah Lightroom does not have a specific selective noise reduction effect. It does, though have a brush effect for Sharpening and Softening, which can actually do a lot unless your noise is really bad. That's what I'm trying to work with.

I need to learn how to sharpen... anyone know a good tutorial?

Here's a major thread with all kinds of stuff on sharpening:

Hmm. In the 7D you can select 4 different groups of points. But your focusing system is awesome anyway. Dont worry about grouping. Play around with it. Use all 3 options and see which one works :) Great for children shots when they are running around :)

I actually tried using Dynamic AF once... and I was baffled why the AF point did not move around..later did I learn that you will not see the AF point move inside the frame (the red light)... but the camera is basically tracking your subject.

ever since that time I have not tried it...so will definitely try it tomorrow :D

I wanna do the fixed lens position and moving target... bursting at 8fps and following the subject from left to right or right to left with just the AF points moving  hhmmmm

Totally agree Tony. You can get fantastic results out of LR sharpening and noise reduction. Im very comfortable going through it if i need to. But i know that i can fine tune those steps more closely in photoshop so i go that route. Different ways of achieving similar results :)

The brushes are pretty good. I use them often when the pictures are being paid for. Example would be softening brush under the eyes for heavy bags or whitening the eyes and teath a tad. The brushes are really good once you get the hang of it all.

I also love the gradient tool in LR. I use that as well :)

Before I ever had LR, and I thought it was a really crap photo:

HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Byte size: ZERO | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE

revisited photo in LR and used that gradient tool:
