what kind of gear do you guys use.

by the time i am asked to shoot golf i will have a grip and a 70-200 2.8 that is on permanent loan from my school to shoot athletics

i was thinking the cheapest way would be the 70-200 with a 1.4X
i also looked at the 100-400 4-5.6 not sure if that would be best for golf

and of course my other option is just renting like a 300 2.8 or a 400 2.8

Brian, I'm sorry, but you've placed this in the wrong forum. This forum is for sharing pictures. There's a sub-forum for discussing sports photography.

Brian, if it's high school the 70-200 will work well alone, and with the 1.4 tube. It really boils down to what kind of access you'll have. For HS I'll typically just bring my 70-200 and my 1.4 tube 'just in case' as I will be within 30' of the players. Also typically have my own cart so I'll bring along my 100-400 L as well, but will prefer to shoot with the 70-200 wide open.

this is collegiate golf DII and the coach or assistant coach will most likely drive me around the course to follow the players so i will have full access as an employee of athletics at my school

You should be fine with 70-200 and a 1.4, I myself prefer the 400 cause it allows great separation of player and back ground.

thanks. great read. out of curiosity how would the quality of a 70-200 2.8 suffer from a 1.4X tele. on my 7D it would be like having a 150-450 f4 right? would that be good for golf as a money saver over always renting a 400 2.8

your comparing apples and oranges with your math there Brian. A 70-200mm f2.8 on a 7d's crop body is a 112-320mm f2.8. A 400mm f2.8 on a 7d is a 640mm f2.8 (compared to full frame).

A 70-200 f2.8 w/ 1.4x TC on a 7d is a 157-448mm f4.

So, if you are comparing focal lengths between the 70-200 2.8 and the 400 2.8, the 400 2.8 is almost 200mm longer, and will be f2.8 instead of f4.

Canon 7D | 70-200mm f2.8is II L | 24-70mm f2.8 L | 50mm f1.8 | 28mm f1.8 | Canon 1.4x TC II | 580EX II

no im just asking how much image quality suffers if i put a 1.4X on a 70-200 i already know that the 400 2.8 would be better hands down. but i dont want IQ to suffer greatly if i go the route of using a tele over renting a 400 2.8. considering ill be doing this for the athletics department at my school as a student employee

i fully understand how focal length works. i just have never worked with super teles and have no clue how teleconverters affect IQ

I pair my 1.4 to my 400 and 70-200 all the time, IMO the IQ suffers a tad, not noticeable enough to worry about unless you are going to blow these images up to bill board size and stand five feet away to view.

yea im not blowing them up to that size. i think going 70-200 with 1.4X sounds like a wise investment and will save money until i can justify budget for longer lenses
