This is a silly question but sometimes I'll spend a long time meticulously outlining an object in my photos with the lasso tool and I'll accidentally double click the mouse before I've finished using the lasso tool.

Take a look. I wanted to continue using the lasso tool around the girl but I accidentally double clicked the mouse before I finished and I had to start over. "Step Backwards" doesn't allow me to continue from where I left off. Can some help me recover when I make this mistake next time?

Hold down the Shift Key then your Right Mouse button to add to your selection. Press the Alt key and then your left mouse button to subtract from the selection. Click anywhere outside your selection to remove it and start over. If all else fails Edit / Undo, or history panel to back up and start over again.

For something Like that I would prefer the Quick Selection tool rather than the Lasso.

On Edit: I misunderstood what you wanted to do but I see now.
You double clicked and your selection disappeared on you.
Go into your history panel and back up to the step above deselect. Or Edit / Undo Deselect. Then refer to the above comments, Shift key to add, Alt key to subtract.

I would still prefer to use the Quick Selection tool, and then you can use the Refine Edge tool. Much easier than the Lasso tool

Few different options to do this, and IMO, the lasso tool is not one of them:
Quick selection tool. Might work good enough for this image.
Quick mask. Not quick.
Pen tool. Not quick, but more accurate. Won't work for hair for instance, but good for smooth shapes.
Color range. (depending on the color of the wall)
Best: Start with a color image and make a mask from the channels.

Masking with Channels.

Using PS CS5 I prefer the quick selection tool, and then use Refine Selection, Then I can make a selection Mask. Much quicker and easier than masking with channels and the results are the same, or even better for fine selections such as hair..

In PS, you can use the "Reselect" option under the Selection menu - it will bring back the last selection you made. Then you can add, etc. to continue your selection. You can also save and load selections.

If you need to make complex selections manually (versus with a channel, quick mask, etc.), learn to use the pen tool and you won't have to worry about dropping your selection.
