I have a lot of woodpeckers around my place. There are the usual hairy's and downy's and my buddy the red breasted. I have seen pileated's, flickers and sapsuckers but have never got a shot of them as they have stayed away from my yard. I have never seen a red headed woodpecker in the area so I was quite surpized and ecstatic to see this guy land on the majic driftwood this mornig and start helping himself to the peanuts. Managed to get a couple of shots before he (I guess it's a he, do both sexes look alike?) took off. He has come back several times for more nuts so perhaps he will be a regular from now on!!!! I do hope so.

All taken with the 50D 70-200L

C&C welcome as always.

Outstanding shots, especially with a 200 mm lens! I'd love to capture one of these guys. Well done!

Wow, so nice! We've seen a real redhead exactly once in our backyard. Flew in, took one look at us and that's the last we've seen of him!

Beautiful shots as always, Mike. Send 'em east across 224 for a photoshoot?

These are wonderful shots Mike...I spotted one of these guys the other day in the top of one of the trees, but he never came down within camera range. I haven't seen any around here in 4-5 years.

What a stunning capture Mike... good thing you were around to see him as they are in a decline in the midwest... much less get these beautiful images... fine shooting.

I found out that they also like whole kernel corn... years ago they used to come to my feeder and pick it up.
