Decision 17mmTSE or 24mmTSE

I have posted this same question over at dpreview so if anyone has answered there no need to answer here.

I have some extra dollars left from vacation and I can purchase one of these lenses. The two seem to be rated very good on sharpness. I know the 17 will give a larger field of view. I have a 5Dmk2 and a 60D. My concern is the large bulging glass of the 17 and flare issues. I also have a 12-24mm Sigma, it has bulging glass also, and I know that flare can be a problem. I just returned from a trip to Arizona and Utah and used my 24-70 l the most, so I could most likely live with the 24. If anyone has first hand experience with these lenses could you let me know your feelings about them?

I was trying to decide which one to get and ended up getting 24mm.
Less distortion and could use ND filter if I wanted to.

the 17 is a really really wide lens, and it can be used to fit a lot of building from a relatively close distance. It's giant front element is somewhat of a downfall for filters and protecting the lens though. If you can suffice with the 24 then I'd say go for it.

Thank you for responding. I am leaning in that direction. I have the same draw backs on my 12-24 Sigma that the 17 would have. So unless I find a compelling reason not to I think I will get the 24. Thanks again.

IMHO if you have to have AF i would opt for the 24 TSE. But thats just me.

I've got both and they are both amazing.

Flare is well controlled on the 17. It is a little weird having all that glass hanging out there, but you get use to it.

The IQ of the 24mkII is pretty close to unmatched.

They are quit different lenses, more so than I thought they would be.
You really have to decide on what focal length your want to shoot. The tilt function comes more into play with the 24. The being able to shift the 17 is what makes it so nice, you really have to experience it.

I'm sure you've perused the 17 and the 24 threads, if not, be sure you do. The 17 thread convinced me to get one.

The photographer i bought the Zeiss 21 ZE from had both also and kept the Canon 24 and sold me the 21 ZE. That should tell you something. They are all fine lenses. Most folks would be happy with any of them IMO.

Was that the TS-E24II he kept, or the 24 f1.4II?

You need both! (phew, INB4Julian)

Ok... that said... I have both but if I could only keep one it would be the 24mm. It's more versatile IMO.

IQ wise they're both amazing (24 is better though).

The TS-E 24II

He told me he really hated to part with the Zeiss but needed some cash and had to part with one of them. I got a good deal on the Zeiss 21 and i saved over $900 bucks versus the stellar 24 giving up a little sharpness but got a lens that renders great color & micro-contrast not to mention the 3D effects.

The 17 takes a 1.4TC really well, supposedly... (I don't have one yet!) and so it essentially allows you to have both in one lens.

For that reason, I'm going with the 17. (I need really wide most of the time anyways.)

Out of those two, I'd get the 24 TSE...cheaper and can use filters. 17 is really wide too.
