Personally, I hate flash brackets. Indoors I bounce the light, and you don't need a bracket to do that. . Outdoors, a flash bracket doesn't make much of a diff.

i saw a clip of a fashion photographer...she carries around a flash bracket

For professional use, quality flash brackets permit the following:

  • Always keeps flash centered above the centerline of the lens, regardless of camera orientation, to prevent objectionable 'side shadow'
  • Always keeps the flash head pointed up to the ceiling, regardless of camera orientation, without the need to re-adjust the flash to keep it pointed upward
  • Moves flash upward from axis of the lens, for increased red-eye prevention
  • Permits the camera to rotate CCW to portrait orientation, so that users of battery grips can continue to have the supplemental control buttons in the right hand


Generally, cheap flash brackets (<$150) do not do ALL of the above; and pro quality (>$200) flash brackets (Newton, RRS, Custom Brackets) do all of the above.
