I was looking at a camera and cactus triggers and read it can do 1/125 sync speed with the camer (it's a sony). I've not used flash other than casual use long ago and don't know how that speed impacts my intention. I want to do outdoor portraits with a softbox or shoot through umbrella. I'm guessing if I'm doing outdoor portraits in the shade with 1/125 that I should be safe? I don't know. Thanks.

Pretty standard. If you are expecting to use wide apertures for shallow DOF then you should plan on getting some neutral density filters in order to cut down the light so you can stay under the synch speed.

1/125 at ISO 100 will result in having to stop down to f/8 - f/11 in sunlight unless you use ND filters.

Won't that keep me from getting that great bokeh? How can I have both flash and bokeh?

Assuming by 'bokeh' you mean that you desire a blurred background, then you will certainly want to get a set of neutral density filters.

These are like sunglasses for the lens. They allow you to use a large aperture and a slow shutter speed at the same time in bright light. This is a requirement for flash photography outdoors in some respects.

Does it affect image quality?

No, unless you get some really cheap ones that have some optical defect.

Otherwise all they do is cut down the amount of light.
