this photo does nothing for me, so heres some tips

-use rule of thirds and include more of either the foreground or sky, although the foreground is underexposed

-because of huge light difference in the sky and foreground, you will have to mask and brighten the grass, or you can exposure blend by taking two different pictures.

-image is also very soft so try to shoot at F/11 with a lower ISO.

-if that wasnt the case, tripod and triggers would play a large role.

-use mirror lockup

keep on shooting!

There are no rules for a good photograph and there are no excuses for a bad one.

Agree with ^

For the bottom picture you might try using a flash to fill the foreground, while keeping the sky in its' natural form. :)

I know what you are trying to show him by lighting the foreground, but it would not work in this case because of the depth and distance of the grass foreground. The flash will only light so far and so much that it would not match. It would work only with a much smaller flash to subject distance.

yeah...I was looking for a POTN thread I came across that had some good examples, and couldn't find 'em :( You are correct, thought, that this subject is fairly distant...

The joys of photography :D (learning how to capture each and every shot 'just right')

Try it with three bracketed exposures and Merge to HDR. Compositional tips in first reply are good too.
