I sat down with the manual (yes, I know it's a rare occurence) for my 580's to see what custom function allows me to change the stop increments when working in M from thirds to halves and couldn't find it. I thought there was a way to do this, no?

I did for a second think the same thing and checked the manual again. There isn't a way to do it in the flash custom function manual. You CAN change your camera to go by halves or thirds, maybe your memory is playing tricks on you.

I set the increments once -- when I got my 580 EX II -- then forgot about it.

I set my 40D increments to 1/3 stop. The flash is thus also set to 1/3 increments. When I put the flash in manual mode, on back of the flash I then dial in manual adjustments -- in 1/3 stop increments.

As I recall, with the flash on the camera if I change the camera's increments to 1/2 stops, the manual flash adjustments will also then be in increments of 1/2.

In other words, the increment determined on the camera determines the increment on the flash.

I just tried my 580EX II with my 7D set to 1/2 stops. Manual flash settings still have 1/3 stops even with the camera set to 1/2 stops.

Looks like you are stuck with 1/3 stops on your flash as there is no CF for 1/2 stops in the 580EX II menu.
