Until recently I was a wedding, engagement, and boudoir photographer only. But I've decided to get into Maternity and Newborn. This was my first maternity shoot. C&C welcome!

1- I think this pose is a little overdone, but the clients wanted it and I actually like how it turned out.

5- A belly painter came in. I'd never actually heard of this before but though it was neat. Not quite the design I would choose but they loved it.

I don't think they are bad at all for your first time, the exposure and color seem pretty good through out but there is one major thing that sticks out to me. These are ALL from the front. She has a small belly as is and she could have really benefited from some sideways photos. Perhaps you took some but you didn't show them?

1 - I find the light a bit harsh here and it only serves to make her belly look even tinier.

2 - They are totally lost in this photo. :(

3 - Again, between their hand/arm positioning and the u/s photo.. you really can't see the belly. Obviously we know she's pregnant because of the photo but you want to see it.

4 - Probably my favorite of the bunch, I think this is a cute idea but again, I wish she was sideways and her hands weren't cut off.

5 - This is interesting, I like how you got an action shot.. but I would have liked to see the side angle ;) I think you could get some really cool stuff with this.

6 - Obviously this works well from this angle because ofthe painting. This is a good shot.

7 - I think this is fine, it works, a little tight in the crop though.

8 - Very tight crop and I find the way they're looking off a little odd. Her belly isn't the focus of the shot, even with the painting on it.

Like I said, my #1 issue is the fact they are all forward facing.

I am super cool n' stuff.

Thank you for your feedback! I do have some from the side... Posted from FB so they're a little "off".

She WAS really tiny to begin with, but to add to it we shot the session early, around 32 weeks. She'd gone into premature labor twice and was on bedrest so we decided to do the shoot sooner rather than too late. Luckily, she went to full term and had a beautiful and healthy baby girl last week (I'm doing the newborn session next week). But, yeah. She wasn't full term yet so there really wasn't too much to her belly.

I think #5 is my favourite. I'm a sucker for using of depth of field to indicate the important aspects of pictures. While the background in the other shots is interesting, I wonder whether it takes the focus away from the pregnant mom. In shots #9, 10 and 11, I might have chosen a really shallow depth of field to draw attention to the people in the shots.

As an aside, I'm currently looking toward developing my logo, and I really like yours!

I'm not a big fan of the location that you've chosen, it lacks a personal touch and not the quality I would pay for, no offense. Even the composition are either have busy background or just bad composition over all.

No I'm not a photographer, I just shoot with Canon DSLR with those lenses with red thingy...;)

my only concern is they seem to be too posed. I love the idea with the sticker :))) Fun!

I am completely amazed at the painted belly... I'm sorry, but that is (as you say) one of the tackiest things I've ever seen in my entire lifetime. :D WOW! They paid for that!?

As to the photos, they're not bad, but could be better?
#1 seems super contrasty on my monitor. The heart hand thing is also overdone, but apparently they like stuff like that...
#2 Nice shot, but not really a portrait, per se?
#3 I actually really like this shot. Like the color of the wall and the simplicity.
#4 Again, a bit cheesy but works for a lot of people I guess, just not me... ;)
#5-8 I just can't get over the belly, sorry.

Overall, the photos are pretty cluttered. There's a LOT going on in the backgrounds and I would recommend a larger aperture to blur the background some more. They look more like snapshots when they're so busy and everything is in focus. That's probably why I like #3 the best, because it focuses on them and not everything else. The painted belly is also distracting but that's just my .02. ;)

I hate to pile on but I'm agreeing with most others....with the exception of #3 this really doesn't look like professional work to me. The perspectives aren't flattering in general, and the backgrounds are cluttered.

I disagree with the folks who say the tummy should look huge in all the shots. It's obvious she's pregnant so it's not like every shot has to be in your face about it. Maternity doesn't mean it's all about the stomach.

I looooooooove the belly paint idea!...wish one of my clients had a belly painter design something on their belly, I get alot of tattoos :-/

The name tag idea is cool also, I will be stealing that one!

1. Seems the light was very harsh...honestly the shot is way too cliche..

2. I had to literally search for them....not a good thing, if you wanted to show scenary, perhaps a dipycht would have been better

3. Love the lilac backdrop, the sonogram is not necessary for a shot like this, is way too far to see, would have worked if you had them look at eachother, all hands on belly, and dad a bit more on her side, looks like he's struggling..

Love all the belly paint shots

On the last one...looks too posed :-/

What's so tacky about the painted belly?...let's be a bit more open minded...one great thing that it does for these pictures is that it brings lots of contrast and I think is wonderful, the parents had this idea in mind before tue shoot and I think the photographer did a good job at capturing it, shooting bellys can become repetitive and this is a good way to change it up, I'd be delighted to have one of my clients draw art on their belly.

As far as her not being big enough, wrong again...she's a perfect size, any much bigger besides becoming more of a challenge for the photog to get good angles, it becomes harder for mom to get into certain poses, move around, etc.

I do agree about the backgrounds being extremely cluttered for no reason though...
