I'm shooting a senior next week and she has a very round face. She's not overweight, it's just the shape of her face. Very pretty girl, but the roundness of her face does not translate well on "film" (at least not with my meager skills). Thanks in advance for any tips you might have for me! :D

If you want to narrow the face, you want to do your best to short light it meaning your key light source is on the side of the face that is furthest from the camera. This way a narrower section of the face is the most brightly lit drawing the eye and creating the elusion of a narrower face.

One common thing to do is increase the height of the photograph by up to 10% without constraining proportions. Its a subtle but surprising effect.

Also, portrait professional works wonders in face sculpting.

Thanks for the tip, this technique sounds very promising! I'll practice it some today.

Is this the software you suggested? The sales video is very compelling and the price seems too good to be true! http://www.portraitprofessional.com/buy/ (external link)

Thanks!

Damian got it. Short light your subject as much as possible. I personally stay away from the liquify tool because it tends to take away from the subjects natural features. You don't want her to look like someone else.

Here's a link on short vs broad lighting...

Why is it so heavily suggested to completely change a persons physical structure with programs? Work with Angles and light - try to do it right in camera. If it doesnt work out, do a reshoot with what you learned.

Short light with at least a stop in half between fill and key light.

Couldn't agree more.

There's nothing wrong with a person with a round face. Just be smart on how you use your light.

+1 Proper use of light and angles does wonders.

As someone with a round head, this thread is brutal.

Light and pose before anything else for the most natural appearance.
