OK, so as a challenge to myself I was wondering which one prime lens I would use for general travel pics probably selling a bit of stock afterwards. I shoot full fame 5d2. Any thoughts?

that's easy: 35/1.4, but not much of a challenge as is very versatile length and wide aperture for night shots..the real challenge for one lens only would be telephoto prime like 200/2.8:)

I fully agree with the 35mm 1.4 thought. It's what i aim to purchase for exactly this reason.

On FF I would rather take a 50mm. 35mm on a 1.6 crop.

If you want to sell some pictures I don't think you can get away with one prime. At the least you'd have to have a 28mm on FF, too.

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.

35mm on FF is a lot more versatile than 50mm would be though, so i would still say the 35mm on FF gives vastly more options than a 50mm would.

If you want more accurate input, then I suggest you add more details to your question. But for just a general question, here is my suggestion:

My vote is the 17L T/S... Using a T/S will challenge you no matter what your experience level is, but they are also excellent lenses to use for shooting portraits or for when you want to have total control of your DOF. :)

Before digital, I travelled with a Leica M4 with 35, 50 and 90 lenses, but the 35 took 80% of the shots. With my Canon F1 film outfit, a 28, 50 and 90 macro. Again, the 28 was used about 80% of the time. If I were to do this with my current gear, the 35L would be the choice, but I use my 24-105 90% of the time when travelling. The 35L is really, really good on indoor low light shots where tripods are prohibited.

Film: Leica M-4, Elan 7E, Rolleiflex 2.8f, Pentax 645 -- Digital: Canon Pro-1, EOS 5D Mk III
EOS Lenses: Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX - Canon EF 17-40 f4.0L - Canon EF 24-105 f4.0L - Canon EF 35 f1.4L USM - Canon EF100-400 f4.5-5.6L IS USM - Canon EF100 f2.8 Macro - Other stuff: MR 14EX - 430EX - 580EXII - ST-E2 - TC1.4x - TC-80N3

I spent a week at the World Expo last year, leaving everything at home besides the 5D MkII and the 50mm f/1.4 lens. It worked out great.

I'd go with 50.

35mm.

I see some people suggesting the 50mm, but I don't think that its wide enough if you want to do some landscape / urban photography. The 35 is good for both portraits and landscapes, you just can't go wrong with it!

I have the 35 L and it lives on my camera.

35 will be easier. 50 will make you think a bit more. Or 35 will make you think more and the 50 will be easier. Depends on you and your style. Pick your favorite focal length..or toss a coin. The object is to challenge yourself, no? Just close your eyes and grab one and that's your challenge.
