Looking for diopters for couple of detail shots on wedding day. Don't want to carry a macro lens. Is there a huge difference in quality between expensive and less expensive? Any good recommendations?

I use kenko extension tubes, usually the medium one.

If by diopters you mean those close focus "filters" that screw on to the front of the lens, in my experience the quality doesn't degrade enough between the cheaper ones and the more expensive ones because either way you're still putting an extra piece of glass on your lens. That being said, they're not worth the trouble. The focusing range is way too narrow and they're too much of a hassle to deal with. Extension tubes are the way to go. You don't even really need the ones with AF, but even then you're not looking at that significant of an investment.

I'm also a fan of the kenko tubes
I'm not really looking for 1:1 when I do ring shot, I just want to get closer and have the rings take a larger piece of the shot... the tubes are a lot less than a macro lens, comes in a set of 3, you can use them all individually at the same time (i.e. your 2nd shooter can be off with a piece doing something else at the same time) and can be added to just about any lens in my kit...

having said all that, I'd love to get a 100L... but that is so far down the list of things to get...

Getting tired of extension tubes, they don't give the same IQ as a dedicated lens. Sometime in the future I will probably own the old Canon 100 f/2.8 macro.

I have the tubes too. I like using the 12mm one with my 85 f1.8.

Agree, macro lenses give better quality, but I am having a hard time justifying the price for how little use it is. That beign said, I would consider selling my fisheye to get one - it hasnt had too much use lately.

What about an old Pentax m42 mount macro lens? You have to use manual focus most of the time with macro anyways, and the quality of the old glass is excellent, and cheaper than newer macro lenses.

I find the quality of tubes fine. There's no extra glass involved, just an air gap. The only reason i'd replace them is because a dedicated macro lens is quicker and easier, but I don't think it's $1000 quicker/easier for me right now.
